@IrrTurfSvcs Yes, SM probes are currently more practical. Value of thermal imaging will be precision irrigation (managing for firm and fast greens) and early detection of hotspots with the increased spatial detail. Still working on improving data interpretation.

We think that soil water potential is a better predictor of stress. The water content associated with wilt will change with soil type. Once you cross a threshold of SWP, the plant can no longer remove water from the soil.

"Down in a hole." @JoeForal starts year two of his MS work. He's trying to measure crop water stress with thermal imagery. New @TurfVu system installed yesterday. Last year, we reduced irrigation by 80-90% compared to ET replacement with no drop in turf quality.

Setting up our ACS 430 sensor from Holland Scientific. Drones are fun but I'd rather have an active sensor on a mower out at dawn. We're going to make variable rate N maps this summer w/ @Andrew_Getty at Jim Ager GC. Check it out at Field Day in the afternoon.

Getting a new @TurfVu camera this spring. Such a great tool to visualize turf color and temperature every 10 minutes. Augusta National is reported to also use thermal imagery (goo.gl/ekSMne, goo.gl/QdJiSt). What do you think is hindering widespread adoption?
