Spirit Airlines is shutting down almost exactly 20 years after Hooters ended Hooters Air (Spirit was partially responsible for that too). Back in 2003, the chain spent $40m to launch Hooters Air with 7 Boeing planes (tagline was “Fly a mile high with us” zing). Based in Myrtle Beach, the plan was to bring golfers to the 100s of golf courses in the South Carolina resort city. The draw was that each flight had two “Hooter Girls” in addition to the flight crew. The airline operated for 3 years but ultimately folded on April 17th, 2006 because: ▫️Target market of golfers was way too niche ▫️Gas prices spiked after Hurricane Katrina ▫️Budget airlines (Spirit Airlines, JetBlue) started ramping up and taking share The whole thing was operated Pace Airliens, a charter plane service Hooters co-founder Robert Brooks had purchased in early 2000s.
