I am disturbed to hear that Pakistani security forces are responding to protests with mass arrests, violence, and internet shutdowns. Freedom of expression is a human right and a vital element of democracy.

I am concerned by the recent military crackdown of peaceful protests in Pakistan. The rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights and should be respected.

A military operation to evict from Islamabad those peacefully demonstrating; and arrest Imran Khan's wife (which the establishment is considering) will be foolish and will only result in more bloodshed, polarization, and instability with unforseen implications. A much smarter course is to release Imran Khan and pursue reconciliation. #Pakistan

The brutal use of force and weapons against Imran Khan's supporters in Pakistan represents a serious breach of democratic principles and human rights. Such actions underscore the need for a critical assessment of Pakistan's commitment to democracy and rule of law.
