Freedom of speech and the freedom to peacefully protest are essential to democracy – that holds true in the United States, in Pakistan, and around the globe.   I stand with pro-democracy advocates in Pakistan as they fight for justice and human rights.

The massive crackdown and use of force to disperse protesters in Islamabad is a blatant violation of human rights and must be stopped immediately. All human rights organizations are closely monitoring this issue.

A military operation to evict from Islamabad those peacefully demonstrating; and arrest Imran Khan's wife (which the establishment is considering) will be foolish and will only result in more bloodshed, polarization, and instability with unforseen implications. A much smarter course is to release Imran Khan and pursue reconciliation. #Pakistan
