After she was released, the man said he is no longer interested in the marriage and when asked his reason by his in-laws, he said that his reason is that the woman disobeyed him and also that the kidnappers must have had mekwe with the lady and he can’t stop thinking about it. This morning something happened in my house that really surprised me. I wanted to bath my little daughter because my wife was busy in the kitchen cooking. Just normal father duties, nothing serious. I carried my daughter and went to the bathroom. Suddenly my wife rushed out of the kitchen like there was an emergency. The way she ran, you would think someone shouted that a bomb was about to drop. She looked at me with very serious eyes and said I should stop immediately. According to her, I have no right to bath our female child and she had warned me about it before. She even said this would be the last warning and that I wouldn’t like what would happen if I tried it again. Honestly, I just stood there confused, looking like a complete fool because I have never heard of any law in Nigeria that says a father cannot bath his own daughter. Now I’m really wondering… Is there actually any rule or cultural belief that says a father shouldn’t bath his daughter? Or is this just something some families believe in? Because in my mind, taking care of your child boy or girl is part of being a parent. I’m genuinely asking: Fathers here, have you ever bathed your daughter before? Mothers, do you think it’s wrong? I’m 36 and my younger sister is 25, so there’s an 11-year gap between us. Her husband happens to be the same age as I am. They met when she was 20 and he was 31, got married when she was 22, and now they have a one-year-old daughter. What’s difficult for me is watching how well he treats her and realizing how much it highlights what’s missing in my own life. He’s very present and supportive, he helps with their baby so she can rest, checks on her throughout the day, plans time for the two of them, and makes it clear that he values her. They both seem to genuinely care for each other and put effort into their marriage, and it shows. I truly love my sister and I’m glad she has that kind of relationship. But seeing it also brings up complicated emotions for me. As the older sister, I always assumed I would have reached those milestones first. Instead, most of my relationships in the past have been unhealthy or toxic, and now at 36 I’m single and don’t have children Sometimes I find myself daydreaming about what it would be like to have a partner who shows that same level of care and consistency. It’s not about wanting her husband, I would never cross that line. It’s more about wishing I had a relationship where I felt that valued. Even so, those thoughts make me feel embarrassed and guilty. I don’t feel angry toward my sister, and I don’t wish for her happiness to change. What I’m really dealing with is feeling like I’ve fallen behind in life and trying to make sense of those emotions without letting them harm my relationship with her or my own wellbeing. Does this make me a bad person?
