For my followers who don't follow that much football:
Japan has never been a powerhouse in football. In each World Cup tournament, we would consider ourselves lucky if we got out of the group stages, and nearly everyone was inexperienced in the top leagues and had only ever played in Japan.
However, this World Cup is different. Japan arguably has the strongest squad in its history going into the tournament, with all but three players competing in Europe, gaining experience playing with and against some of the best clubs and players in the world. Unlike past World Cups where we often entered nervous and scared, we are going in confident.
Japan has never made it past the Round of 16. However there are legitimate expectations for us to make history and go deep into the tournament this time.
Our opening game will take place in a few hours against the Netherlands, one of the strongest teams in the world. This match will be the first real test for the Samurai Blue!
