@JackRhysider @evans_cn As you know, state privacy laws vary widely and at least some states are stepping up (Illinois and biometric data, NY State and financial data, CCPR in California, etc.) but it'll likely mirror our current patchwork of privacy laws which -- sucks -- but is what we have for now.

@evans_cn no I don't think that's the solution. if people don't want to be private, forcing them to do it is just going to make them mad. convince them this is important, win their hearts and minds, and suddenly the tippingpoint will happen instantly.

I stopped using all fitness trackers. I got betrayed badly by one. It tracked my runs, and then publicly was posting it, and I didn't even know it was doing it. Which lead to a fan of mine finding out exactly where I run each week. I can't find a single fitness tracker that doesn't send all my data to a 3rd party. And if you don't know about the "3rd party doctrine", it basically says the government won't respect your privacy if you send your data to a 3rd party. So all your health data your fitness tracker collects is easily accessible by the government. Regimes come and go, data is forever. Protect yours!

@JackRhysider I stopped using my fitness tracker last fall when they started using AI as part of their toolset. Privacy is hard fought, but putting my biometric data into an LLM seemed like a particularly bad idea.

@emptywheel If a lopsided win occurs for the Ds, that will feed into the fraud screeching they'll do and they'll point to the polling as proof they got robbed.

@dkMOMUS My favorite part about my current "good" dental plan is that it doesn't cover work to "the most distal teeth" -- i.e. the ones in the very back, all four of 'em. I found this out after my husband had a cavity there. "So you only cover most of my teeth?" -- Yes, was the answer

@sherrod_im Interesting, I don't want to agree w/this, but find myself nodding with what you're saying. The counter argument would be politicians want to protect their personal privacy and may begrudgingly extend it to others. Or state laws eventually overwhelm Feds, making it pointless

The United States will never have a federal privacy law. Because it would include abortion protections which is based on privacy. You won’t have a privacy protection law because they want to control your bodily autonomy.

I decided today that I'm going to live like I'm dying because there are so many people out there who, sadly, are, and they don't have a choice. I'm not going to waste the privilege I have. I'm going to capitalize on every minute I have. And, I didn't get the car because that would have been irresponsible given what's going on at work. I've had plenty of cars. I'll have another soon enough. And, the backup camera will get fixed. Because it's fixable and I need to stop acting and pretending like I don't have a career where fixing things like backup cameras isn't my daily routine because it is. Also my very good friend is my mechanic and he's also my neighbor so if the dealership can't fix it he can. I think I'm inviting negative things in my life because I'm acting and projecting like I'm helpless when I'm not. I have to stop whining and get to work. It's a new year and I'm still alive and for that I am very grateful because I still say we're living in the best timeline and I can't wait to see what they do with AI and all the other technical marvels that they're going to come out with in the next 5 to 10 years. I'm going to choose to look on the bright side at least it's not the Middle ages and I'm not being burned at the stake for being a witch or suspected of being one because I'm good with my hands and I have a brain.
