It’s spring, you know what that means: monarch butterflies migrating north. Even better news? After years of declining population numbers, this year, they went up.

🌸 As of 7:46 am today, spring has arrived! 🌸 Today marks the first day of spring at Grand Canyon National Park — a season of longer days, blooming desert plants, and incredible canyon views. It’s also one of our busiest times, with Spring Break crowds filling the South Rim. If you’re planning to visit, here are two easy ways to avoid the biggest crowds: • ⏰ Arrive early (before 9 am) or later in the day (after 4 pm) • 🚍 Park once, then use the free shuttle buses — instead of searching for limited parking 🔥 Important: An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect this weekend. Temperatures in the inner canyon are expected to break records — making conditions dangerous for hiking during midday. • 🥾 Avoid strenuous hiking during the hottest part of the day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.). • 💧 Drink plenty of water and balance water intake with food or electrolytes. • ☀️ Plan ahead and know your limits—heat illness can happen quickly in the Inner Canyon. During peak midday heat, consider visiting the Village Historic District, walking the Canyon Rim Trail, or touring scenic overlooks. • 🚌 Tour Hermit Road on free shuttles. (closed to private vehicles). • 🚗 Drive 23 mile (37 km) Desert View Drive in your car. Spring is beautiful here — just be prepared and stay safe! 🌄 Happy Spring Equinox! March 20, 2026. Happy vernal equinox! 🍀 Today marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. After today, the Sun will shine more directly on the Northern Hemisphere than on the Southern Hemisphere until the autumnal equinox.

Celebrating SPRING with a reminder that the projected start of peak bloom for Washington’s cherry blossoms is between March 29 and April 1! 🌸 Did you know the two Library of Congress cherry trees are among just a handful of documented originals from the 1912 gift from Japan? Including this one. 🧵⬇️

Ahhhh, spring. The sun is shining, the snow is melting, and the bears are emerging from their months-long hibernation! That means it's time to be bear aware. All of Yellowstone is bear country - from the park's backcountry to the boardwalks and parking lots around Old Faithful. So be sure to hike in groups of three or more, carry bear spray (and know how to use it!), and always stay at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears. Sir Isaac Newton died #onthisday in 1727. One of the most revered scientists of his age, Newton is most celebrated for his conception of the law of universal gravitation, as well as for his work in the fields of optics, mechanics and astronomy. Before his funeral in the Abbey, his body lay in state in the Jerusalem Chamber, and many of the Fellows of the Royal Society joined the procession of his coffin. His memorial in the nave includes a figure of Newton, along with boys using instruments related to his mathematical and optical work.
