@filpster64 @newstart_2024 If you want an apple and not the orange you have, and I want an orange and not my apple, then if we trade, both our problems are solved. That's not a compromise. We are both better off and better able to deal with the next problems we encounter in absolute terms. Universe wide.

@MagnusWDHH @newstart_2024 The quote essentially means "all 'solutions' are really tradeoffs". The more I learn about the universe more I recognize that this is true everywhere you look

One line from Thomas Sowell completely rewired how Konstantin Kisin sees the world: “There are no solutions, only trade-offs.” Kisin says we’ve lost the ability to think like this. We treat every big issue — climate change, the NHS, COVID lockdowns, free speech — as if it has a perfect fix. But every policy, every choice, comes with real costs. Locking down might save some lives but costs others. More free speech means some people will get offended. Trying to “solve” complex problems usually just moves the pain around. The brutal truth? Most of our loud political shouting matches are childish because they pretend one side can magically eliminate problems that are eternal. Once you internalize “no solutions, only trade-offs,” a lot of the noise starts sounding ridiculous. What’s a trade-off you’ve had to accept recently — in politics, health, career, or relationships — that made you realise there really are no pure wins?

@filpster64 @newstart_2024 I haven't adjusted the definion. The quote is a sloppy one. "There are no solutions only tradeoffs" implies both a contradiction and that solutions don't exist. But people act to make things better and can succeed, and as you say, tradeoffs aren't in contradiction to that.

@MagnusWDHH @newstart_2024 I can tell you've already adjusted your definition of "solved" to meet the reality of the quote. And that's a good thing. It means you've internalized it. So there's really no contradiction, here. "Making things better overall" is the optimization of aggregated tradeoffs.

@asianick85 @newstart_2024 There are no solutions from governments. But again, that's not what Sowell was talking about. Problems do in fact have solutions that make life better for everyone, not just personally, or at other people's expense. Curing polio did in fact just make everyone's lives better.

@asianick85 @newstart_2024 Thomas Sowell wasn't talking about government policies when he said that, he was speaking more generally about life and decision making. Politics makes things worse for many reasons, but solutions to problems do exist. It's not all about managing a finite pie through tradeoffs.

If this becomes a law near you, you should run. Even if you have nothing, it's more than you will be left with.

Unrealized gains tax for Gen-Z: You buy a Pokémon card for $50. Someone offers you $500 for it. You say no. You love that card. You're keeping it. The government says: "Cool, but that card is worth $500 now. You owe us $100 in taxes." You: "…I didn't sell it." Government: "Don't care. Pay up." You don't have $100 lying around. So you're forced to sell the card you love just to pay a tax on money you never received. Next month? That card drops back to $50. Your card is gone. Your money is gone. And the government shrugs. That's a wealth tax on unrealized gains. They don't pay you back the tax... Now picture this. Your mom calls you crying. She has to sell the house she raised you in. Not because she can't afford it. She's lived there 30 years. It's paid off. But some website says it's worth more now and the government says she owes $15,000 she doesn't have. So she sells your childhood home. The kitchen where she made you breakfast. The doorframe where she marked your height every birthday. Gone. To pay a tax on money that was never real. Now picture the opposite. Your dad put everything into his small business. For 20 years he built it from nothing. One year the business is "valued" at $2 million on paper. He owes a massive tax bill. He empties his savings. Sells his truck. Borrows money. Pays it. Next year the market crashes. His business is worth $200,000. He lost everything to pay a tax on a number that doesn't exist anymore. Does the government give him his money back? No. Does the government give him his truck back? No. Does the government care? No. They sold this idea as "taxing billionaires." But billionaires have armies of lawyers, offshore accounts, and trusts. They'll be fine. You know who won't be fine? Your mom. Your dad. Your neighbor with a small business. The farmer down the road who's had the same land for four generations and now has to sell it because dirt got expensive. You're not taxing wealth. You're taxing people for owning things. It's like getting a parking ticket for a car you might drive somewhere someday. They want you to own nothing and be happy. To fund the fraud, waste and abuse of the welfare state they created. There is enough money. More tax isn't needed. It's all a lie. But you've been gaslit into believing this is a rich vs poor debate. I hope you understand what's at stake.

@Deepread_com @newstart_2024 The Mises quote is true, but Sowell's quote unfortunately isn't. Humans act *because* they expect solutions or improved ends. Tradeoffs are involved, but both are a part of action. They aren't mutally exclusive.

@newstart_2024 Sowell distilled it. Mises built the whole cathedral. Politicians never opened either book. "The costs of any action are the value attached to the satisfaction which one must forgo in order to attain the end aimed at." — Ludwig von Mises, Human Action

Andrew Bridgen was arrested for sharing an Amelia meme. This is why I refuse to set foot in the UK. Even though my opposition to the UK's censorship regime is purely in my capacity as counsel, I have no confidence that I wouldn't be detained the second I land at LHR.

PT/1 Please see below my voluntary statement which I read out in my police interview on Monday of last week over an allegedly ‘spicy tweet’. The police confirmed today that ‘No Further Action’ will be taken on this. Where the complaint to the police was (I am told) anonymous, I struggle to think that this was a proper use of police time. What does everyone think?🧵👇

@ApexJones22 Because they started using replica lightsabers during filming instead of light weight metal poles, so they now move like they are heavy rather than made of light.

Was Thomas Massie really just another one of those “social media” congressmen? I could have sworn he passed more than just 1 bill his entire career. Damn. That’s bad.

@GaytriotGannon @NoToDigitalID 1A. "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech". *The* freedom of speech being something that preexists any legislation. That exists without qualification. "Lawful speech" is already qualified, with unlawful speech to be determined by the state at any time.

Today @KebleOxford unveils their latest (and arguably greatest) religious works on April 1st 2026, April Fools Day of all days! "After a lot of planning, fundraising and committee meetings, we are delighted to announce a new initiative to bring the city of Oxford a little bit closer together. An identical “Headington Shark” will be installed on our Chapel roof at the end of this month in addition to our Chapel 150 celebrations this year! 🦈 Wondering if a complementary shark face will be fixed to the Chapel ceiling? Visit us between 2 and 5 pm any day to find out" instagram.com/p/DWlNjiMDLC8/ (Posted edited to include the original link)
