@cremieuxrecueil Most humans seek an authority to be obedient to. If this was not true religions and dictatorships would not exist. We are far less individualistic than we fancy ourselves to be, and far more herd like. If one dares to be a bit different than the herd, we call them a black sheep.

I am often shocked by how many seemingly rational academics believe strange, false assertions if they come from places of perceived authority. I don't know many of those people who would actually suggest just believing any odd thing they say just because of their authority.
