A California man just received 12 years in federal prison for stealing $59 million from American pandemic relief programs and wiring most of it to China. He had a Mexican passport hidden in his dryer under a fake name. He was transferring up to $1.5 million per week at peak. Bruce Jin, 61, of Los Angeles, was sentenced April 30, 2026, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering on a staggering scale. The scheme ran primarily from 2021 to 2022, exploiting the chaos of COVID-era relief programs. Here is how it worked. Co-conspirators, some of them believed to be operating directly from China, created thousands of fraudulent bank accounts across the US using stolen personal information from identity theft victims. Fake unemployment claims were filed against those accounts in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and other states. The money was then funneled through shell companies posing as legitimate PPE businesses selling masks and COVID supplies, including Jin's own companies Ample International and Jin Commerce. Over $45 million was extracted through ACH electronic transfers alone. Jin then wired over $35 million internationally to a Chinese company and over $2 million directly to the individual in China controlling it. The entire operation was a cross-Pacific fraud pipeline built on stolen American identities and pandemic relief dollars. When agents arrested Jin in August 2023, they found a Mexican passport hidden in a dryer under a false name. GPS records showed he had visited the Mexican consulate shortly before arrest. He lied to pretrial services about his finances while handling millions per week. He was held without bail as a serious flight risk. There is no extradition treaty with China. Jin was ordered to forfeit over $59 million. Two co-conspirators have pleaded guilty and face sentencing this month. The unnamed Chinese operatives who set up the fraudulent accounts and generated claims from overseas remain unidentified and at large. American pandemic relief money, paid out to help citizens survive a crisis, was systematically stolen by a network with operations anchored in China, processed through stolen identities, and wired back across the Pacific. I won’t say I told you so, but people really need to start paying attention. These 15-minute city plans are always sold as harmless, convenient and green. A nice local lifestyle. Shorter trips. Better services. Nothing to worry about. But the danger is the infrastructure underneath it cameras, tracking, digital permissions, transport controls, energy restrictions, data centres being prioritised over ordinary people, rising power bills, possible brownouts, pressure on water, and a public that slowly gets used to being managed instead of served. No walls are needed when movement, money, speech, energy and access can all be monitored or restricted digitally. Maybe some of it is genuinely well-intentioned. But if people sleepwalk into it without asking hard questions, they may not like the life waiting on the other side. Wake up before convenience becomes control.

The reaction to Dawkins deciding Claude is conscious is fascinating. It really is just the Strong AI position that Roger Penrose was criticising in the 1980s. If you think consciousness is just an emergent property of a sufficiently complex computer then of course AI is conscious. It passes the Turing test and that’s it. The really interesting part is why it is obvious to so many of us that AI is *not* conscious: obvious to the point we think Dawkins’ credulity is amusing. What are we basing that on? Are we deluded or is there something else to consciousness that we cannot articulate but that we clearly sense?

I live in a part of Georgia where 75% of my neighbors voted for Trump. Trump signs and flags were everywhere. “Were” They’ve all be replaced with American flags and signs that say things like “True Conservative” No more Trump signs. ZERO. And all the MAGA influencers that live in Florida and DC will say it’s not true, that MAGA is alive and well. They’re lying to you, probably not even intentionally. They live in a bubble and don’t see the real America around them. When’s the last time u saw a MAGA hat in the wild? You used to see them at the mall, airports, and in the street. Conservatism isn’t dead. It just needs a new leader.
