I’d never seen Dave Urick mad. And he was pretty livid. He was pretty livid at me. It was a coaches convention, and as I walked past the trio of Urick, Bill Tierney and Dave Cottle, he pulled me over to talk about this cover. Justin Berry had been dominating face-offs. He pretty much carried Towson to a Final Four. He did so with a stick that had an uncanny light bulb shape as you can see in the second photo. Narrow at the base. People think of Urick as the guy who won all the D3 titles. But his additional, thankless behind the scenes role was as the NCAA’s authority on stick dimensions. We learned that Barry was heating and pinching the throat, but leaving the head regulation width where referees have to measure. So it passed the on field inspection. Mike Keegan interviewed him about it, and the “Face-Off Flambe” cover was born. I recall being pretty defensive until he explained that in the rulebook it says you can’t manipulate the stick from factory settings. So even though it can’t be detected by a referee, our cover line of “It’s simple. It’s legal. And it works” was indeed out of line and understandably offensive to the guy in his shoes. The refs couldn’t catch it. But it certainly wasn’t legal. It’s only a problem that could have existed at that moment in time. Soon the manufacturers would simply build the narrow throat into store-bought designs. Stick complexity makes the sport beautiful. It also complicates things. Players beta test innovations by bending the rules and then manufacturers patent them. It’s how it’s always been. The Gaits bent their handle. The committee outlawed it. And then Brine created the offset patent to replicate the effect. I love Dave Urick. In this instance, we made his job harder. He had his finger in a crack in a dam, trying to keep sticks fair. Rest in peace Coach… And a hearty reminder to double check the rule book when writing articles about stick tech.

When you see stuff like this, you can't get upset. Fairly or unfairly, critics judge writers based on movies not scripts. But why would SR attach himself to hack work? Isn't it more likely the script is great and that's why he's doing it? This guy has no idea how movies get made.
