Laravel "hot take": over-engineering may be a real problem Not everything needs an Action class, a DTO, and an Event. If your store method is 3 lines, LEAVE IT in the Controller. Over-engineering hurts readability more than "fat controllers."

Guess the cat is out of the bag! I've been writing PHP since the late 90's, and its growth as a language has paralleled mine as a developer. I'm happy and honored to be able to be a part of a group of people working to continue advancing the language so many of us depend on!

The value that Shift provides is honestly _insane_ even in these new days of LLMs. If you've never done a Laravel upgrade with Shift, you owe it to yourself to checkout @gonedark's amazing tool.
Jason McCreary@gonedark

Promoting Shift has always been a challenge. It became more of a challenge yesterday. The truth is you can always upgrade yourself. I know Shift does more - cheaper, faster, thorough. If you've used Shift, you know this too. If you haven't, I hope you still give it a try.

I know this post is going to basically die in silence because all the ones I make about the ideas I’m most interested in do, so if you read this far let’s be friends

A friendly reminder that - time is made up - any time telling technology after the sundial is subtly lying to increase societal productivity (see Postman’s ‘Technopoly’) - your value is infinitely deeper than your productivity - everything is temporary but God, who is all

My #1 priority right now is to ease the dread of figuring out how to pay bills at the start of February. I am in Japan until Jan 25th, without my laptop, unable to do proper interviews. 😭 Not great! Open to short term contracts, as this can be less "risky" for both sides ❤️

I... have been laid off from Laracasts. 😭 Pretty bummed out, but AI did, in fact, take my job. I'm looking for a new opportunity! ♥️

@gonedark Tbh it would never occur to me to use AI instead of Shift for an upgrade. I have, and I feel will for a long time, much greater trust in Shift doing it right

I try to have a "keep calm and carry on" mentality. I default to optimism. But coming off a flat year, and with the news over the last few weeks I want to share my thoughts. Specifically on AI and Shift. If I'm being honest, Shift still beats AI when it comes to upgrading a Laravel app. The domain specific knowledge I have acquired over the last 10 years, and my bar for thoroughness is much higher than AI. Can AI upgrade your app? Yes, of course. But just like a DIY upgrade, it's not trying to meet the same bar. It's bar is simply "works". It also takes time (and tokens). So it too, has a cost. Will AI ultimately beat Shift. Yes, undoubtably. But I think this is the wrong way to look at it. Shift beats AI. Or AI beats Shift. It doesn't have to be competitive. It doesn't have to be a zero-sum game. I think it can be collaborative... at least in the near term. There's a place for Shift to do the automation it does best. And a place for AI to fill in the gaps with the automation it does best. That's the ideal workflow I see. I don't know exactly how that works. But I am choosing a collaborative path. For now, Shift is dealing with a "1-2 punch". It's not just AI, but also less "major" releases from Laravel. So I'm waiting. I'm keeping calm. Shift has been here before. There have been years with soft releases, less releases, even no releases. There have been other upgrade tools. Shift has always been at some crossroad. That's the biggest reason I never hired. When it's just me, I can wait. I can pivot. When it's more, I have to make it work. That's no fun. Shift has, is, and will continue to be fun for me. I think Shift still has a place. But it needs to adapt. So, yeah, AI is awesome. And, it's probably going to "win". But, for now, Shift is still pretty awesome too.
