The federal government has approved for the complete rehabilitation of the Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, with the total cost amounting to ₦712.26 billion. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has sanctioned the comprehensive renovation, enhancement, and modernization of International Terminal One at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. This initiative serves as the flagship project of a broader ₦900 billion plan to transform aviation infrastructure across Nigeria. Following the council's meeting led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, the decision was announced on Thursday. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced that the project, which has been awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), involves dismantling the outdated terminal completely to its essential structural framework. After this, new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems will be installed as part of the rebuild. In Lagos, the Council has sanctioned the growth of Terminal Two, which encompasses building a new apron, access roads, bridges, and associated infrastructure. Upon integrating the Terminal One project, the overall expenditure for all airport ventures linked to Lagos reaches ₦712.26 billion. This makes it one of the most substantial individual investments in Nigeria’s aviation industry in recent years. In an effort to enhance security at Lagos airport, the council has approved a ₦49.9 billion project for the construction of a perimeter fence. The 14.6-kilometer steel barrier will be equipped with an intrusion detection system, CCTV cameras, solar-powered floodlights, and a patrol road. Keyamo highlighted that the security upgrades will feature an advanced command center designed to monitor and identify any movements near the fence instantaneously. He said, “Anyone or anything close to the fence will be detected immediately, and the location pinpointed.”
