With 4o Image Generation, it's time to revisit Scott Alexander's bet against Vitor. Although Scott declared victory back in Sep. 2022, some commenters (myself included) felt this was dubious. For each prompt, I'll generate exactly four pictures and post all of them.🧵

Honestly, I like Canada, I like Canadians, and it's hard to imagine having better neighbors.

1/3 Here’s a plea to all of Twitter. If you agree, please retweet, because I think it’s important. If you’re going to leave: 1) Don’t delete your account, because someone else could grab it. 2) Don’t delete your tweets, because they are part of a unique historical snapshot.

It’s been about a month since I went to Mastodon. It’s much better for me. Also, I only follow people I’ve met. Without anyone with an agenda to engage me, my feed takes 3 minutes and all of it enriches my life. Only coming back to ask: why are you still here?

@alexeheath I'm a little disappointed. Given the source, I think we have to be skeptical that the initiative is real, and we should be careful when he name-drops others to make it seem more real. In particular, did you attempt to confirm this with @moxie?

@NeilKNet @VasiliyZukanov @pmarca It recognizes that most people in large organizations are doing very little actual impactful work. This was true at amazon and is probably true everywhere. Top performers love what’s happening. Squatters hate it.

If I were a coder in my 20s again, I know exactly where I would go work right now. What an incredible moment.

@pmarca Finally, someone said it! I truly can't understand the "no one will want to work at Twitter anymore" mantra making cycles. I like challenges, fast paced dev-driven culture and I don't like bueraucratic approval processes and meeting, so the new Twitter would be my #1 pick.

@carlsverre I got a lot of value here from early-breaking news (like nearly 2 months advance warning for COVID) and alternative takes (masks are good actually!) However, this comes at the cost of being driven somewhat insane the rest of the time

I’m intrigued by the number of people who say that they will go down with twitter rather than finding an alternative. Is the cost of rebuilding your network elsewhere too high? Are there too many choices? Why not leave before? So curious… 🫤

Why I left @twitter or rather why I did not sign up for “extremely hardcore” Twitter 2.0 🧵

legal and moral implications? unconscionable impacts to life and liberty of users and employees? you might get fined or testify before Congress? has this stopped the guy before?

tbh I expect they are going to bumble along with a lot more downtime and the engs will get used to shutting down and restarting services in sequence, with throttled % of users this is usually the last resort and it will become their 1st resort

This is all true, but don’t expect Twitter to just die suddenly There are options – a lot more options! – once you are willing to accept the loss of some sleep, some users, some reliability, some metrics, some reputation, and some of your immortal soul

I've seen a lot of people asking "why does everyone think Twitter is doomed?" As an SRE and sysadmin with 10+ years of industry experience, I wanted to write up a few scenarios that are real threats to the integrity of the bird site over the coming weeks.

What's something under $100 that you bought (or were gifted) that makes you very happy? Can be work stuff, kitchen stuff, books, gadgets, subscriptions, experiences—anything at all. Thinking about doing a gift guide again this year, and looking for inspiration 🎁
