Really enjoyed the memoirs of Archpriest Avvakum— "founder" of the Old Believers, who refused to comply with church reforms in the late 1600s. Avvakum wrote it while exiled in the far north. You can feel his resoluteness and fury at those who easily bent to corrupt priests.

Em Pernambuco ocorreu a Batalha dos Guararapes (1648–1649), onde, pela primeira vez, brasileiros (brancos europeus, negros escravizados e indígenas) lutaram juntos para expulsar um inimigo estrangeiro. Hoje, o Monte dos Guararapes é reconhecido como o berço da pátria brasileira. Foi também em Pernambuco que se ouviu o "Primeiro Grito da República" no Brasil (e nas Américas!), lá em Olinda, nos anos de 1710. No nosso hino, há um trecho em que cantamos: "A República é filha de Olinda". Não apenas isso, mas foi também aqui, agora em Recife, que a República foi oficialmente proclamada pela primeira vez em terras brasileiras, no dia 6 de março de 1817, data que hoje é o feriado da Data Magna do estado. Em 1849, eclodiu a Revolução Praieira, que demandava uma nova Constituição que garantisse liberdade de imprensa, o voto livre e universal, o fim do Poder Moderador do imperador e o federalismo. Citei alguns eventos relevantes, mas o histórico revolucionário de Pernambuco, que ajudou a moldar a República Federativa e democrática que temos hoje, é muito mais amplo e ignorá-lo é desconhecer a história do Brasil.
