Today, I represented H.E. President @KagutaMuseveni at the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) celebrations in Mubende District. The President appreciated the PWDs for their contributions to the development of the country. He thanked them for embracing wealth creation programmes such as the Parish Development Model and affirmative action initiatives like National Special Grant for Persons with Disabilities. Yesterday, we successfully completed the outreach in Abim Hospital. A total of 83 people were operated on and had their sight restored. As I travelled with my amazing team today, each one had a particular patient whose story impacted their lives the most. To all of us, eye surgery is not just about operating. It’s about connecting with the patients and listening to their stories and watching in awe the profound difference that surgery made in their lives. So, I listened to my clinician narrate about the 30-year- old lady who was blind in both eyes, yet had 3 children to take care of. He had visited her village and relentlessly persuaded her mother to allow her come for the surgery. Then my nurse couldn’t forget about the 89 years old man who kept calling me sweet names, and his 77 years old wife. She wondered how they had been managing with blindness. Then, there was, of course the 15 years old boy, born with cataract who had to wait for a whole 15 years to see the light of the world. These, plus many other stories is what makes me continue doing the things that I do.

Lowering the SAGE eligibility age means an increased number of beneficiaries. A great way to enhance access to social protection for Older Persons. More cash means, greater resilience to shocks and access to basics of life. @mofpedU @upfsp @Mglsd_UG @MoLGUganda @pwatchug
