@arthistorynews I fear I have been brainwashed - the lack of proper Paladian proportions offends my aesthetic sensibilities.

Wonderful Elizabethan panelling - a charming and slightly garbled take on wider European, Renaissance styles, usually influenced by printed books. Under the Stuarts, we want mainly for a purer classicism, and lost this distinctly English variation.

@arthistorynews We experienced exactly the same thing in the TV colour grade when we made the Lost Masterpieces episode. Balancing the darkness with the detail is so difficult. I always wonder how much of Caravaggios work he saw when he was in Rome.

Final colour proofing session today for my book. Joseph Wright of Derby was *by far* the hardest to get right, and I take that as yet another sign of his subtle brilliance.

One of my tests of a great landscape is if you can hear the weather. Constable nails it almost every time.

Image fees - important statement from Creative Commons on the new copyright situation in the UK. They also remind museums to *not* use Creative Commons licences on images of historic artworks - because these images are now free for everyone to use! creativecommons.org/2024/01/18/uk-…

@DalrympleWill Peter Kosminsky's 'The Promise', made for C4 in 2011, was good. It alerted me to my ignorance of the Nakba at a time when I was working in Tel Aviv on a Holocaust survivor documentary. It inspired me to see as much as I could of Palestinian culture and I found Jaffa fascinating.

The Tragedy of the Palestinians - so many bright & opinionated people remain completely ignorant of their history of dispossession and subjugation, and go out of their way not to even try to understand it. There are no well known movies about the Nakba in English, no TV series telling of the Palestinian plight & while, rightfully, all UK schoolchildren by law learn about the Holocaust, few, if any, study the Nakba. The Palestinian cause drowns in that well of ignorance and indifference. It's one of the great injustices of our world and never has that been more obvious than in the last three months, in the way the West has lined up to enable and assist in the mass murder of the people of Gaza and the levelling of their refugee camps.

"You are from Britain, would you accept to give Manchester to some other people [the Israelis]?" Today marks the birthday of the late Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser: an anti-Zionist, anti-imperialist, pan-Arabist, and the most popular Arab president in history.

Strange bedfellows: @arthistorynews and an AI algorithm. Tucked away in this report is the news that both think there is a good chance the Haddo Madonna was painted by Raphael. Mystery of Raphael masterpiece may have been solved by Bradford-made AI theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…

Clocks go back 1 hour this Sunday. This needless change means higher energy costs, more road accidents, more heart attacks, more depressive illness. It damages the economy with UK in darkness by 5pm next week. Fewer old pple venture out on dark nights too independent.co.uk/life-style/hea…

@FrannyMoyle Amazing little room that, the bust by Bernini somehow emphasises what a great portrait the painting is.

@arthistorynews Monet made a similar claim when his first wife Camille died. He felt compelled to reach for his paints to try and capture the colour draining from her face.

Ramsay said of painting the portrait, that ‘while thoroughly occupied thus, [he] felt no more concern than if the subject had been an indifferent one. All his grief was gone. When he laid down his pencil it returned’. 3/

The great Scottish painter Allan Ramsay died #OTD in 1784. Known for his elegant society portraits, Ramsay could also summon emotions rarely seen on canvas. In 1741 he made an oil sketch of his eldest son, Allan, on his deathbed. 1/

Van Dyck’s masterpiece aged 24. Possibly his greatest portrait to date IMHO. He is aged 24. Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio 1623.
