In 1891 the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology issued a series of maps and a catalog of the burial, effigy, linear, midden, stone and shell mounds, and earthworks they had identified. This was their map of Florida. The black dots that look like hats are mound complex sites. Of course, today, thousands more are known.
