Today, we closed our latest funding round with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852B post-money valuation. The fastest way to expand AI’s benefits is to put useful intelligence in people’s hands early and let access compound globally. This funding gives us resources to lead at scale. openai.com/index/accelera…

Hate to break it to you, but the first LLM was created by Andrey Markov in 1913. he tallied up 20,000 letters from a famous novel and computed p(vowel | vowel) p(consonant | vowel) p(vowel | consonant) p(consonant | consonant) basically 'training' a bigram by hand

Oh god are we really doing this? Jeff Dean trained an n-gram model on the entire internet in 2007. Jelinek coined the term "language model" in the '70s. It's called "Claude" because Claude Shannon was estimating the entropy rate of the English language in 1951!

37 million years old! 😱
Archaeo - Histories@archeohistories

In 2016; a well preserved and complete skeleton of a Basilosaurus (Pre-historic Archaeocete Whale), about 37 million years old (more than 65ft long), found in Wadi Al Hitan, also known as Valley of the Whales in the western desert, Egypt 🇪🇬. This region was once a part of the ocean in Cretaceous period (65 million years ago). Dozens of rare fossilized whale skeletons have emerged from the sands of the Egyptian Saharan desert. A museum has now opened on the site to help preserve the fossils. Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, a paleontological site in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, some 150km south-west of Cairo, in the Western Desert of Egypt. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005, for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whale, the  archaeoceti (a now extinct sub-order of whales). These fossils represent one of the major stories of evolution: the emergence of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from a previous life as a land-based animal. Wadi Al-Hitan is the most important site in the world for the demonstration of this stage of evolution. It portrays vividly the form and life of these whales during their transition. The number, concentration and quality of such fossils here is unique, as is their accessibility and setting in an attractive and protected landscape. The fossils of Al-Hitan show the youngest archaeocetes, in the last stages of losing their hind limbs. Other fossil material in the site makes it possible to reconstruct the surrounding environmental and ecological conditions of the time. The first fossil skeletons of whales were discovered in the winter of 1902–03. The World Heritage property is a strictly protected zone, set within the wider landscape of the attractive Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area. It is an exceptional global reference site because of the number, concentration, quality and accessibility of the evidence of the earliest whales, often in the form of complete skeletons, and the record of the environment that they lived in. #archaeohistories

11 out of 11 cofounders have now left a company valued at $250 billion. xAI started with 12 founding members including Elon. Jimmy Ba co-authored the Adam optimizer, the most cited paper in AI history with 95,000+ citations. Igor Babuschkin was chief engineer from DeepMind. Greg Yang left in 2024 to start his own company. Tony Wu departed February 10, 2026. Jimmy Ba resigned within 24 hours. By mid-March, only Kroiss and Nordeen remained. This week, both walked. The exodus started accelerating right after SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal valuing the combined entity at $1.25 trillion. Tesla had invested $2 billion in xAI's Series E just weeks before. Tesla shareholders are now suing Elon for breach of fiduciary duty over that investment. Two weeks ago, Elon publicly said xAI's coding tools don't work and the company needs to be "rebuilt from the foundations up." That's the founder of a $250 billion company admitting the product doesn't function. Tesla put $2 billion into it anyway. xAI just hired two product engineering leads from Cursor to try to fix the coding gap. Meanwhile Meta is offering AI researchers packages worth $300 million over four years. The 11 researchers who just left xAI represent exactly the kind of talent every lab is bidding on. 200,000 H100 GPUs sitting in Memphis. A chatbot with distribution through X. A $250 billion valuation. And zero original cofounders left to build on any of it.

BREAKING NEWS: @rpoo Ross Nordeen has left xAI, he was the last remaining cofounder. Only @elonmusk is left! Ross played an big part in the compute strategy & bring up of the overall hardware & software layer of xAI datacenters.

OpenAI shutting down Sora is the most predictable outcome of misunderstanding consumer behavior. Everyone grossly overestimates how creative people want to be. 99% of humans simply want to scroll and zone out instead of spending energy conceptualizing, editing, and creating videos. No matter how much the barrier to creation is lowered by a single prompt. It still takes effort and a fair amount of creative thinking. Even Instagram has 2 billion users. But hardly ~10 million (or 0.5%) would be serious creators. So any AI consumer app betting on "with [new_app], everyone becomes a creator!" is being delusional and will go down the same way. After all the word "consumer" exists for a reason. They consume. They don't produce (or even want to lol)
