In the loop where he confesses AFTER trying to attack her, she thinks he's NotBaru & likely wants to extract real Subaru's location or assumes he is as dead as Meili.

In my opinion, one of Subaru’s hardest decisions is in this scene. Even though he did nothing, Ram blames Subaru for Rem’s death. Here, Subaru is able to find within himself the virtue to forgive Rem, who tortured him, and Ram, who blamed him for no reason. He chooses virtue over anger, and by jumping off the cliff to save them, he restarts again. And for Subaru, Wrath is described like this: "Wrath, because I cannot forgive the absurdity of it all." Subaru does not fall into Wrath here because he finds the virtue to forgive the absurdity and injustice he has been pushed into.

@Emanor_x Novels make it more clear, but Emilia not recognizing Echidna in the stasis block, while Betty & Roswaal do... implies there is functionally two Echidnas.. at least. Also shown in how History_Echidna wants Betty to grow up well, but TeaParty_E is happy w/400 years of depression.

@k1phex I find it more likely we'll see an Emi/Suba schism during Arc11 or in the lead up to the 'Final Run', which would be a good time to bring Rem back properly. OR Enough threats are on the board to resolve all characters pre-'Final Run' while keeping Kill/Merge/??? Satella stakes.

@rannoaka06 Based on the phrasing and relative timelines, it seemed that the birds became quite active around the same time that Subaru showed up in the world. Which is also why we see them during the From Zero conversation, the Speech, and in the distance during the lap pillow at S1 end.

@Ortoros3 @Wassimouu I actually disagree on the death part. Tappei has been clear about writing a happy ending. That's why the torture blender. It is payment up front. As I said earlier, writing speed is a valid complaint. Though most 10ish books series do take 15 or so years to write, at minimum.

@PredationLewdsA @Wassimouu I agree abolutely. Moreover, I believed she must die for the story to progress. But not a single story holds a character hostage for 13 years and counting. She lost her memories in 2013. There are some plots that should be finished by now and are unnecessary dragged.

@aeolian550 1 is the msot important Arc & has lots of hidden things. But, 2 is the arc that really sold me on how different Re:Zero genuinely is from other stories. The emotional impact of Subaru crashing out at torturer Rem, asking why she doesn't remember.. that will always stay with me.

definitely a giga hot take, but after both rewatching and rereading arcs 1-2, while 2 is obviously "better," i've preferred 1 both in the anime and the novels. feels like after you've seen it a couple times 2 just get a bit boring. 1 is endlessly rewatchable for me

@Ortoros3 @Wassimouu There are plenty of threads that have started to be revealed, in every single Arc. Major resolution doesn't come till the end. Subaru needed Rem's absence as motivation, just as Rem needed major time w/o memories to not be shackled by idol wosrhsip, or she'd never have agency.

@PredationLewdsA @Wassimouu Timeloop stories stert opening secrets early or in the middle, such as steins gate. As an example with Rem, dragging a single plot with "Sorry Subaru, her memories are in another castle" for 10 consecutive years is not a "formula work at its core". Nobody does that.

Criticize the writing speed if you want but the goal's been laid out from the start. It's how both timeloop & forbidden love genre formulas work at their core.

@PureC0ncept As an example: She plays the part of a dutiful maid at the mansion in Arc2, yet she is purposefuly and consistently lazy. It isn't boredom or lack of ability. It is specifically to allow Rem to earn the comparative achievement & praise she was never able to recieve w/ the Oni.
