I had a conversation with a Power 4 college coach who’s been doing this for 25+ years. We were talking about the mentality of high school players during the recruiting process. Here’s what he told me: “What these kids don’t realize is… I don’t care how many followers you have. I don’t care how many home runs you hit in travel ball. I don’t care how many offers you have. I don’t care about your ranking. I don’t care how hard you can hit a ball. I don’t care about your metrics. The only thing I care about is this: Are you going to produce in between those white lines when we play this season?” Then he said something else that hit: “They’ve been so protected that the first time they fail, they quit… or they transfer.” And here’s the part that matters. The biggest development mistake I see? Players don’t plan for failure. They plan for success. They visualize success. They expect success. But they don’t prepare for 0-4. They don’t prepare for getting booed. They don’t prepare for sitting the bench. They don’t prepare for struggling for 3 weeks. So when it happens — and it will — they panic. Instead of executing a pre-made plan, they try to create one while emotional. That never works. Failure is coming. The question is: Did you already decide how you’re going to handle it?

@RCC_LSU I gotcha. I would schedule those others camps you have on the books already because you don’t want to lose out on those opportunities. Also I sent a dm to several coaches at Tulsa to see if I get any information on the camp dates

If your not signed up for any college camps yet make sure you get your camp schedule crafted up. Don’t wait till it’s too late. I can’t explain how important camp SZN is for athletes. This is where you get to show off your skill set to college coaches. This is also where college coaches are evaluating you. So many opportunities can come from camp season so don’t skip out on it.

It's not often you coach a group of young men that care so much for each other and gave me every ounce of perspiration they had in them. Loved every day I was with them. Thank you Men!!!

I walked up to the coach, shook his hand, talked to him real quick, and then that was it. I couldn't believe it. It was camp season... I was ready to go. I weighed in. I got my height checked. Walk out to the field. Sat my bag down, opened it up, and grabbed my cleats. Slipped my cleats on, tied them up, grabbed my football, and got to warming up. After a few throws, and my body feeling loose and ready to go, it was time. I went through all the drills and 1-on-1's. I felt great about how it all went. The camp was over, I went up to the coach I was with the most. He hardly gave me the time of day. I walked away discouraged, frustrated, and confused. As I walked away another QB came up to the coach... Immediately the coach was more energized. I looked back and saw the who it was. I had outperformed in every area in the camp... but for some reason something he had done really impressed this coach. And that's when I realized that I was missing something. Which is why I'm writing this email. So that you or your son aren't missing something that leads to a missed opportunity. Learn from my mistakes and focus on these 5 areas before even thinking about recruiting: 1. Grades Talent gets you interest. Grades get you offered. Focus on getting good grades, and that will give you more opportunities than you could ever imagine. 2. Sleep Sleep is a superdrug. If you get just 8 hours of sleep you: • Increase your athletic performance • Decrease risk of injury • Decrease stress So focus on getting 8+ hours of sleep every. single. night. 3. Getting Faster and Stronger What you do on the field matters more than any 40 time or bench press number. But being fast and strong does help. Spend time doing plyometrics and track workouts to get faster. Get in the weight room and do: •Bench Press • Squat (Front and Back) • Cleans (Hang and Power) • Deadlifts There's no such thing as being too fast or too strong. Improving Your Skills Film is what gets you interest from college coaches. To have good film you need to be good at football. To be good at football you need to practice and get better. Get a private coach. Spend at least 1 hour everyday improving at your position. Become obsessed. The results you will see and the confidence you will have are your reward for being dedicated to your craft. Eating High Quality and Quantity of Food I didn't learn the importance of nutrition till I was 19. If I would have before then my athletic career would have been completely different. On top of that it is important to look the part when talking to coaches. And weights do help, but nutrition is the biggest factor in getting big. Here's a simple list of things to do: •Track your food (MyFitnessPal) • Eat a carb, fat, protein, and vegetable with every meal • Don't rely on supplements (protein shakes, vitamins, etc.) • Eat a lot if you want to gain weight So don't wait. You have the plan in front of you. Go execute.

'Pistol Pete' Maravich sharing his testimony of faith in Jesus Christ in 1987 less than one year before his death at the age of 40: "I want all of you to know this tonight about Peter Maravich. You may never have heard of me. It makes no difference. I'm just one person on this earth saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. I want you to know this, that the change that came into my life was Jesus Christ. It was not winning. I won all my life. I won every trophy, award, everything you can think of, but every time I won something, I wanted something more. I had to win again. It wasn't money, because money'll buy you everything but happiness. It'll pay your fare at every place but Heaven. Material things—I've driven everything some of you strive for from Rolls Royces to BMWs to Mercedes to Porsches. It wasn't religion because in the name of religion, Jesus Christ was placed upon that cross. And the purest thing about Christianity is the fact that it's your choice. You can't work. You can't earn. I knew that, and I understood it now. I want you to know this. The last thing I'd like to say is this, next week I'll be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I'll get that big ring. In fact, it's a bigger ring than I would have got for the championship, but I'll tell you something about all the awards. They all pale to the glory of Christ and what He's done in my life. It's amazing what He has done in my life. I wouldn't trade my position in Christ for a thousand NBA championships or a thousand Hall of Fame rings or for a hundred billion dollars. There's nothing like the joy of Jesus Christ in your life."
