The South African government must stop this nonsense of placing bozos who are totally ignorant of the arts both at practice and intellectual levels at the helm of that Department, like the current people who run it today and think they can censor artists as if we still live in the apartheid era. Those of us who went through censorship during apartheid, and fought for the freedom these goons who want to censor us are enjoying today, will not allow this! When I heard of the Gabrielle Goliath case I was attacked by a quiet rage. I was there before as one who had been censored, during the days when the Boers lorded over us and banned We Shall Sing for the Fatherland and Other Plays. I didn’t imagine we would go through that again in a liberated South Africa all because of politicians who are neither politically nor artistically savvy. Are they not aware of history? Where were they when a Minister of Arts and Culture many years ago, a certain Lulu Xingwana, (going totally against the progressive worldview of her party, the ANC, on issues of human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of artistic expression etc), using her own morality, tried to sideline the works of the internationally admired artist, Zanele Muholi, claiming that it went against nation building and social cohesion? It was an incident that shamed South Africa all over the world. This Goliath issue too will do the same. I responded to the Xingwana issue, by the way, by writing a novel, The Sculptors of Mapungubwe, where I satirize the notion of creating state-approved art to meet the needs of nebulous notions of social cohesion and nation-building as defined by the ruling elite. These notions are weaponized to serve the interests of those who are in power. Their meaning is fluid depending on whose political interests they serve. To the bozos, creating art on Gaza does not contribute to social cohesion and nation building IN SOUTH AFRICA, whereas to the artist, it is a ripe subject for art like any other human rights violation in any part of the universe.
