Near death experience? Today was a special afternoon in Crown Heights in Brooklyn. I met up with my nieces and nephews and many of their kids — 22 great-nieces and great-nephews in all — and we gathered at Kingston Pizza. It was a joyful, lively scene and a great way to reconnect before my nephew’s wedding tomorrow. Afterward I headed back to Manhattan on the subway. I figured, why not? It’s about a $3.50 ride and saves an $80 Uber. At the last stop I boarded the 4 train in Crown Heights. At first it was just me and one other guy, who seemed to be talking to himself. It was just me and him, for the first stop and then a few people got on at the next stop. Then suddenly the man pulled out a knife about a foot long and started smashing it against the wall and window of the train car. No glass was broken. It took me about 5 seconds to process, although it seemed like minutes, at what was happening. At the next stop...The other passengers calmly moved to the next car. I followed right behind them. Everyone stayed calm and simply created distance. Thankfully no one was hurt. Still, it makes you think. Public transit should be safe. I love the idea of hopping on the subway and getting across the city for a few dollars — it’s part of the magic of New York. But should anyone have to wonder if something like that might happen on a routine ride home?

Staggering studs along common walls has been a huge success for us in reducing sound transfer. This example is from our 15-unit townhome project at 1000 Moro. By staggering the studs, it decouples the wall (the drywall on one side doesn’t touch the studs on the other side) thereby preventing sound from traveling through the structure. It also creates an air gap which breaks the structural bridge for sound transfer.
