It frustrates me that each day my kids get home from school I have to ask them about their day, discover what woke stuff they were taught, and then find the data to deprogram the rubbish they were forced to ingest. Instead of having a nice discussion of things, after school, we instead have to have a de-indoctrination session. For example, today, my daughters were exposed to the "sudden rise in violence towards women" narrative, and the stuff that happened at Yarra Valley Grammar. So, I had to find the data (e.g. from the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare) that shows there hasn't actually been a substantial rise in domestic violence against women. So I could then show my daughters that, whilst there has been a numerical rise over the past 12 months, the longer term trend was very much a substantial decline. That women are, today, much safer than they were over most of the past years. I also had to explain to them that whilst the behaviour of some boys at Yarra Valley Grammar was offensive, the incident itself was not more dramatic than other bad things that happen (from time to time) at many schools. That the principal difference for this incident is that someone brought it to the media's attention - that without the media getting involved it would likely have amounted to nothing more than the involved boys getting a standard punishment for such a thing (e.g. a string of detentions and/or suspensions). That, under normal circumstances, the dished out punishments would teach the perpetrators what they needed to be taught and that life would then go on as normal - instead of attempts, by the media and government, to pathologize the issue and to permanently damage the school and the boys. I had to explain to my kids that this stuff was really about governments and media stoking fear within the community, because fear is a great tool to distract people from more substantial issues and/or a great way to manipulate people into useful behaviours. I did this to (attempt to) reverse the fear being instilled in girls. That my daughters should not feel afraid of all the boys, that almost all boys and men are good people - some of whom will make mistakes, will be punished, and who will learn from those mistakes to become better people. I did this to help my daughters to be critical thinkers, to question why a media or government might be spouting a narrative that is contrary to what the data reveals, and that they should always ask questions and seek corroborating source (raw) data before trusting an "authority".

What Misogynists fail to comprehend about the "bear vs man" question is that it's not about bears. The discussion is about violence against women. Violence that has become so common & dangerous to women that when asked this question many women chose bear, not because women think bears are not dangerous, but because women know statistically & through their own experiences just how dangerous misogynistic men are.

"It's not about you, mate": My column at ABC today is about what male leaders sometimes get wrong when they encounter female distress. Even when they're well-intentioned. If you do choose to do me the honour of reading it, I'd suggest getting to the end. abc.net.au/news/2024-05-0…

@JessPected @emrazz Yep, great show. I almost gave up after the first episode, then realised it’s satire, & it just got better and better. Very clever.

There was a recent interesting series that took on the trope of the "loveable goof" shitty husband & miserable (hot) nag trying to survive his weaponized incompetence & showed how not cute it is.

@JessPected So many sitcoms feature a schlumphy, unpleasant man paired with a hot, conventionally attractive, constantly ticked-off (by her man) woman, from the Jackie Gleason Show to The King of Queens. Do men think this was a promise?
