Israel killed my 82-year-old neighbor. Yousra al-Ashqar (Om Jehad), born in 1944, has passed away. Last Monday, March 23, the Israeli terrorist forces opened fire on the devastated city of Beit Lahia, north Gaza. One bullet struck Om Jehad in the thigh. The bullet fractured her bone, leaving her in a fragile state. Though doctors initially feared she was too weak for surgery, her family eventually moved forward with the procedure on Saturday. Tragically, her body could not withstand the trauma and pain. She passed away this morning. She lived just 300 feet from us, a constant presence in my life since we first moved to Beit Lahia in 2000. I remember greeting her every morning, first on my way to school, then to university, and eventually as I left to begin my own teaching career. She and her late husband, who once taught my father in high school, ran a small shop out of their home. They were the definition of generosity; I’ll never forget how they welcomed us to the neighborhood with fresh bread when we first arrived at our small house. She is gone now, and I will always remember her. I can never forgive Israel for taking everything from me, beginning with my grandparents’ home and land in Yaffa in 1948, and continuing over the years with the lives, homes, and futures of my family and loved ones in Gaza.
