I’ve derived tremendous value from Twitter and have used it daily, though I don’t tweet much. Sadly, I’m deleting the Twitter app after 14 years. I’ll leave my account in case things turn around. But I cannot via my presence support its ownership.

@WebReflection If you want to preserve the color semantics of your painted wall, it’s best to use AOT compilation of touch-up paint rather than JIT compilation. 😜

with white walls, even if I've damaged those too, I could "polyfill" holes which is something I am kinda "literally" reasonably good at 🤣

long story short: if your architect suggest painted walls while renewing your place, check their own walls and realize these are likely white. paint, in walls, is a curse if that color in particular disappears from the market. tools to repair walls are also white; not that shade!

Absolute classic, “on the spectrum of abstraction.” Couple this with @richhickey’s “simple made easy” viewpoint of abstraction and a trade offs viewpoint of architecture, @ruthmalan style. (ruthmalan.com/Journal/2019/2…). Level up for shared code design.

@TwitterSupport so someone sent me a DM years ago and I have no wish to initiate further contact with them. Is there a way that person could NOT be the first option presented when I go to share a tweet? As it has been for years since our last conversation. Years.

@shreyas The “tribal leadership” book offers a (kinda cheesy) model to explain this and some (kinda meager) coaching advice on how to get past it. But then, some way forward is better than no way forward? Also, the model can give some (again meager) guidance on assessing this in hiring.

You can teach people a lot of things, but you cannot teach them to truly care about the quality of the work they put out. They will go through the motions & follow your processes for maintaining a certain quality bar, but that will not teach them to care. Care comes from within.

@Carnage4Life Calling a dispatch number and then waiting for a yellow cab, never knowing if or when they would arrive was a horrible experience. Early Uber was just crushingly better than the alternative. And more expensive. And I was happy to pay more. Was that business great? 🤷‍♂️

@Carnage4Life Pre-Uber when I lived near union square and my boyfriend lived near the ocean, I used to have to routinely lie to yellow cabs about where I was going then change the destination mid-trip because they would refuse to take me otherwise. The bus model is more than the price.

@KentBeck I’m sure it varies by org, but I’d expect that a manager could have some leeway over what constitutes the proof required to meet the policy and thus some agency regardless of policy

@Selkirk This is a corporate policy, though. Managers might prefer one over the other but in the end they don't set the policy although they influence it.

Been thinking about retrospective promotions, where you have to prove you're successful at the higher level for a while before you get the title. They create a perverse incentive to delay promos to avoid increasing compensation.

@anaismitchell Ability to be surprised. Ability to focus and have less distraction. There’s a hyper-active awareness of all the bad things in the world now. That time was calmer, more trusting, less selfish. More locally connected, less globally connected.

Imagine if those "Career Days" they do for kids came with honest guidance on probability of success: Actor - 90% luck, 5% talent, 5% hard work Doctor - 10% luck, 10% talent, 80% hard work Fireman - 5% luck, 10% talent, 85% hard work Founder - 30% luck, 20% talent, 50% hard work

@Carnage4Life Price of items delivered isn’t necessarily the same as in-store prices. My guess is the delivery customers are the more profitable and less price sensitive ones. I’ve been getting some sort of delivery for over 10 years and use several services. Groceries are a subscription.

@dan_abramov Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid maybe? Programmer gets drunk, accidentally meets and helps dragon, dragon moves into her city apartment to do housework in gratitude, a “found family” is created. You can pause during the work scenes to read the code.
