Allow me to share one of the coolest things I've done with my kids this year Last month, I saw a video where these graduating seniors were shown interviews their younger selves had conducted when they first entered the school. Some of their answers were similar, others not so much. It was awesome to see how much they had grown during their time there. I have countless pictures of my kids but I realized I don't have any conversations with them recorded. So I told them I'd get them a kid-friendly drink, we'd sit in comfy chairs, and we'd do an interview on camera. They were free to skip any questions (they didn't) but it would be fun, if only to look back on it when they were older. It was AMAZING I pretended I was a podcast host. It felt a little hokey at first, but my older one quickly settled in. I started with a few softballs and then asked her questions like these: • How do you define success? • What’s one thing you hope never changes about you? • What’s something you’ve learned from your parents that you hope to pass on someday? • What do you believe is true that most people your age might not agree with? • What are your biggest hopes for yourself in the next 5 or 10 years? For the younger, I made the questions more age appropriate: • What does being kind mean to you? • What’s something you’re really good at right now? • What do you think adults don’t understand about kids? The best thing about this exercise? During the conversation, my kids unconsciously forgot they were talking to a parent. It felt like they were speaking to an interviewer, so they were much more open and honest. The setup Jedi mind-tricked them into sharing more and going deeper than they would over a dinner table. My teenager even later admitted she fought back tears at one point. I do have great relationships with both my kids and we already talk a lot. But this interview was different and quite enjoyable. Suspect we'll appreciate it even more down the line when we look back on it.

One of the great tragedies of the ‘Enjoy your 20’s narratives’ is that people have lost the years they could be front loading their careers. Putting in intentional hard work in their 20’s allows people to enjoy flexibility and freedom when they have kids. Why? Because they have experience and experience is leverage. It doesn’t have to be family or career. It can be building a career that works for your family.

Never worked as hard in my life as I have for the first 2.5 months of 2026. Decided to take the day off tomorrow so I can go skiing with my son. Three months from now, he will have to share my attention with another boy, and I think about it a lot ❤️

Since I post most my life online... wins and struggles This morning we got up to go to church I was in the kitchen drinking my morning glass of water. My wife yelled, I need water. So I started filling her a glass Then she screamed, everything is black, I cant see I sprinted to the room, right as I entered she fainted blackout. I caught her. Her body went limp, her eyes rolled back, her mouth opened and life flashed before my eyes. Its a picture I never want to re-live I sprinted for my phone to call 911 when I came back into the room she was awake, but limp. I held her, I prayed over her We landed in the ER for the next 7 hours While we were there a "code white" eta 5 minutes came across the speakers, I watched nurses scrambling. I googled code white - child with life threatening Within 5 minutes I heard the screams of a mother I never want to hear again. Whaling and Weeping. I was supposed to be at church, hands high singing praises to a God for everything good in my life. Now I am in the ER asking God to give me the same strength to sing the same praises Thats when faith becomes real So what happened? We dont know. All tests and blood work came back clear They did give her 2L of liquids and she still hasn't urinated - so possible severe dehydration Her body hasn't recovered from our car accident, she hasn't felt good, low appetite We think it just all caught up with her. Now we battle the fear of it happening again. She doesnt want to be alone, I dont want to leave her. If you are the praying type, pray for us. Pray for a family who lost a child today in the ER Much Love, Shawn

@SideHustle_LP Interesting. I would have assumed LA had perfected the Pickleball club by now honestly... Maybe an opportunity? OR, they already know it's a tough business.

New pickleball club in Oakland. Looks premium and pretty nice. I imagine this is the direction these places have to go to thrive, with lounge space, events, F&B…and create an actual “country club” environment that’s more than just the sport. Do these places have a chance of surviving? *ive never played pickleball before.

If you don’t provide window coverings in your apartment building, each tenant will choose his own (I once used a flattened cardboard box for like 2 months) & your building will look terrible from the outside.

@robbiehendricks Flume is another great option for tracking water usage and leaks. Hooks onto your home water meter. Battery lasts a long time so basically maintenance free.

So unbelievably proud of my wife today 😊 The company she started, PUL, just launched one of their dental products in Walmart. What started as an idea at the kitchen table is now on the shelves of all 3,500+ Walmarts in America. Years of hard work and dedication. And we welcomed our first baby 6 months ago in the middle of it all. Watching her build this has been incredible. If you're currently in Invisalign or clear aligners, comment below...we’ll pick a few people and send you some products ♥️

@SideHustle_LP When your "adult" kids (say 20-26) makes choices you disagree with but they are "adults" even though you still support them and they also dont want to ask or be told... not easy

PSA: for those raising toddlers to high schools - raising "adult" (college, post college) is much harder and you will still lose sleep.

One of the best early 80s games ever is Choplifter, from 1982, developed by Dan Gorlin and published by Broderbund. It also became one of the best selling games ever for the Apple II. I first saw and played this at a friend's house. We had a handrittwen "Highscore" list that we updated over several months, signed by all players present when we played it. One simple rule was that highscores only counted when at least one other person was present and signed it off. I wished that list didn't get lost in time. Early 80s gaming included so many things that don't exist anymore today... handwritten high score lists, drawn dungeon maps, and level codes.

On Friday I exited my 35th missing middle development project This one was fully remote as I moved to California August in 2024 and bought this land October 2024 It was a larger parcel that I figured out I could squeeze 6 units on here instead of just 4 as the seller originally thought Since it was on a corner, I went through the subdivision process to use 44% of the lot to create this duplex then I used the remainder for a 4plex The key piece to this was that in addition to subdivision, we petitioned to change the front + side setback from 20’ down to 5’ This allowed me to squeeze the 4 units instead of just 2 that most developers thought you could do Land was on the market available to anyone and it might have looked like I paid a premium for the lot, but in reality, my effective land cost per unit was lower than theirs
