I read Elisabeth Engberg-Pedersen in the 1990s who wrote that, as a hearing linguist, it wasn’t her place to decide who was ‘Deaf’ or ‘deaf’. Rightly or wrongly, I opted to use ‘deaf’ (or ‘deaf signers’) in my own academic writing as a PhD student and have done so ever since.
