The Senate War Investigating Committee, led by Senator Brewster, was weaponized against Hughes. Brewster privately offered Hughes a deal—drop his aviation business and let Pan Am monopolize international flights in exchange for the government backing off. When Hughes refused, the hearings went public. Brewster then pushed for aggressive audits of Hughes Aircraft, attempting to bankrupt his company through endless legal and financial scrutiny. Hughes responded by directly confronting the committee, exposing the government’s corruption and dirty tricks. He famously testified for days, refusing to let them destroy his reputation or company. In the end, Hughes retained control, but the tactics were clear: relentless legal harassment and media manipulation.
