struggling to find the right way to say this but i think media criticism is broken because everything around the media and the media itself is so broken. it’s hard and fraught to criticize something that’s so fractured and siloed and it’s also so hard to criticize something as crucially important while also suggesting trust has waned so much that it is kind of irrelevant and hopelessly out of touch. not to say the criticism isn’t relevant or often correct. but it also feels outmoded. there’s still lots of “above the fold/below the fold” comparisons when clearly none of that matters in an ecosystem where a viral tiktok is genuinely competing for eyeballs with the wh press corps
