Last month: Management was pushing us to hit 100% AI adoption, so half the team was basically having casual chats with Claude just to boost AI usage metrics for performance reviews. This month: Mandatory sessions on Copilot token optimization and reducing AI consumption. My org moved from "use more AI" to "please stop using so much AI" in about two weeks. 😂

@MelodicHydra @WestlannWyvern I feel like I’ve gotten more than the difference in value out of the DCS F-14 since it launched in 2019. Lots of the visual improvements are making their way into the base module. Heatblur has the track record such that I didn’t even bat an eye over the preorder

@WestlannWyvern True I could do that but I do like HB enough to overlook the extra 10 bucks they’ve earned it for how much detail are in their modules. Plus I think glove vanes and some editions for the older tomcats are finally coming next patch so it’s not like all the work was for the B(U).

@RSE_VB Actually I may be misremembering my history a bit and was thinking of Lexington after Coral Sea, but I did seem to remember (after checking myself on Wikipedia) that Yorktown remained afloat even after abandonment and was only finally done in by a Japanese submarine torpedo.

@RSE_VB Reminds me of when they scuttled the Yorktown after the Battle of Midway; ended up being more complicated than “just have the destroyer fire a couple of torpedoes and that should do it.”

Sure. There are innumerable scenarios. But as much as some people think US aircraft carriers are very vulnerable these days, consider the intentional sinking of the USS America in 1996. “The U.S. Navy spent nearly four continuous weeks bombarding the vessel off the East Coast. It was subjected to simulated torpedoes, underwater explosives, cruise missiles, and bombs, yet it stubbornly refused to sink due to its massive size, double-layered hull, and vast compartmentalization. The Final Scuttle: Because conventional weaponry fired from a distance failed to take it down, Navy personnel ultimately had to board the carrier and manually place explosive demolition charges inside the hull to finally force it beneath the surface.” They’re not as easy to kill as most think. That’s why my Dad (36 years in the Navy, Aviator and ship Captain) said many years ago that the first use of a nuke in anger would be at sea, against a Carrier Strike Group. That would really be the only way the Soviets could sink one.

@RSE_VB Would the scenario in Clancy’s Red Storm Rising have been possible? Waves of Soviet cruise missiles sent as Backfire decoys to draw the fire?

@WMcluskey @fandompulse @GeoGDF01 I guess fans of successful franchises shouldn’t get more of what made those franchises successful in the first place. How dumb is modern Hollywood?

@potatoslav @GeoGDF01 That's funny for two reasons ...one that's probably why there are so many fucking Germans in Pennsylvania. And two I really love Pennsylvania.

everyone getting mad at this but seeming to forget they not everyone travels to go to different cities and eat foods. some people travel to hike and climb mountains and explore the natural landscape of the world and the US actually is one of the most geographically diverse countries on earth. most of the German landscape looks like Pennsylvania.

The average American is vastly more well traveled in distance, geographical, weather/climate, and cultural differences within the borders of the United States than the average European The average European literally can not comprehend North America

@psu_chris Yeah I’m not sure that nvenc exists on FreeBSD; pretty sure it’s only for graphics acceleration (and whatever compute you can do with the card without CUDA). Glad the devfs stuff worked, at least.

@UnixGeek82 well the jail can see the card.. but ffmpeg crashes as jellyfin does not like it i guess.. because no CUDA.. dang nab it.. thanks for the article.. this does allow me to try other things at least.

@psu_chris I know the VA-API accel works, because instead of choking out the host on CPU usage when it tries to transcode, overall load stays very low (and the video doesn't stutter) 🙃

@psu_chris I use Jellyfin with an intel iGPU, and I was just looking back at my bookmarks. This from the pre-official-port days was the basis of my devfs rules github.com/Thefrank/jelly…
