@charlot_summers Even with the best intentions, more senior people who are giving this advice are not able to really understand individual circumstances and provide the best support.

@charlot_summers Thank you Charlotte. More representation and changing views will help over time but we also need more support for people in these critical decision making/career transition stages now. Also wider things like funding and structural support for ICM departments.

🔥Have been incensed about something all day…. Women are the majority of medical students in the UK, yet there are still pockets of the medical profession where dinosaurs are alive, well & roam the earth. Turns out my own clinical specialty (ICM) is sadly one such place…. 1/8

@charlot_summers Often we end up compromising and feeling like we can’t pursue our ambitions because we think it’s the pragmatic/only solution.

1 Thread on #mpox which is in the news again since a returning traveller was diagnosed in Sweden with a new more dangerous strain which reached Europe for the first time. In the 2022-23 global outbreak I was clinical advisor to @WHOEurope Here’s what I think you need to know.

8/9 Take home message -> Increased representation of high-risk phenotypes associated with inflammation and catabolism in Black and Asian patients could be driven by baseline differences in health status, reflecting longstanding health inequalities.

Shocking differences. Residents of Barking and Dagenham have the same life expectancy as they did 10 years ago, compared to boroughs like Kensington and Chelsea where improvements have continued until much more recently. data.london.gov.uk/dataset/life-e…

2 – Life expectancy by London borough The latest data on life expectancy shows large inequalities in how long you can expect to live, depending on which borough you live in. Women in Westminster can expect to live 6 years longer than those in Barking & Dagenham – Men 7 years

Fantastic talk from @YizeWan summarising the disproportionately poor outcomes experienced by patients from minority ethnic groups with COVID19.

I am running for the ESICM NEXT committee along with fellow clinicians and active researchers @carenzmd @LuigiLaVia7 @m_zawadka. I aim to support early career development of Intensivists, improve diversity and representation, and promote the multi-collaborative work of @ESICM.
