Does Congress not get a say in a policy shift as tectonic as this one?! Where is Congress?! How the hell does this or any president have the right to destroy a military alliance of many decades, based on his personal decision?

Read this list. Trump is the worst free speech president of my lifetime, easily.
Nico Perrino@NicoPerrino

I don't know the answer to Jim's question, but I question his premise that one of Trump's great successes is "enabling free speech." Consider that he and his administration have: · signed an executive order purporting to ban flag burning and punishing it by up to one year in jail; · targeted visa holders and lawful permanent residents for deportation based on their speech; · revoked federal funding from Harvard and other universities and conditioned future funding on adopting speech codes and restricting academic freedom; · issued executive orders singling out disfavored law firms that effectively made it impossible for them to work with the federal government, its contractors, or even have access to the federal courts; · repeatedly threatened the licenses of TV networks who hosted late-night comedians and broadcast news reports he didn’t like, including by re-opening frivolous Federal Communications Commission complaints against broadcasters that were previously dismissed as being “fundamentally at odds with the First Amendment”; · suggested his attorney general, Pam Bondi, should investigate ABC News for “hate speech”; · banned the Associated Press from the White House press pool because it refused to adopt “Gulf of America” in its editorial standards; · blatantly directed criminal prosecutions of political opponents, such as former FBI Director James Comey and New York state Attorney General Letitia James; · pressured app stores to remove lawful apps from their app store offerings. · and targeted, detained, and even shot citizens who protested or filmed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducting operations in public places. etc.

@tgriffith1992 I don't even understand what draws these effeminate, handwringing nerds to sports in the first place. It's so counter to everything they otherwise believe in.

@BonifaceOption I think this is a largely good post. I do think a serious treatment of the more general topic - testimony vs. prurient storytelling/attention seeking - is needed. Where is it? Perhaps it's not left to us (humans) to set it?

This kind of stuff would actually have some cache if we lived in a healthy civilization where antisocial behaviors, especially promiscuity were heavily stigmatized, rather than something idealized and celebrated by a significant percentage of the population. If you lived in a world where a girl who whored herself out to dozens of random men was treated with the same degree of scorn society at large today only reserves for things like racism (and apparently those who shame promiscuous women), then you could say "Jesus has redeemed me from this great shame. I am free." But when there is no shame whatsoever, and stigma is actually only directed at those who disapprove of women being an unwalled garden, then there really isn't any liberation from shame since there wasn't much to begin with, and instead you have established a career path for online prostitutes to retire into once their looks and attendant earnings begin to diminish. In this particular case (and there are countless others) the reformed prostitute transitions from gaining attention from sex to gaining attention from her redemption from selling sex. She still operates within the attention economy under a different function. That is a major part of the reaction here. It is a more acute corollary to the declining celebrity who has a radical conversion to Christianity. His star has diminished, but now he has a new market that will cherish him as the broader public once did. Instead of making money in a Hollywood that has rejected him, he can now make movies for Angel Studios. Wise pastoral counsel in both cases would be to advise getting out of the public eye for the sake of their faith. Their ability to garner attention is their "great riches." If they are unwilling to set aside those great riches, they, like the rich, young ruler, will go away sorrowful. Addressing these concerns and weighing them in our particular societal disfunction is not "denying the power of God in the gospel." Certainly not more than claiming the prodigal son, in the moment he decides to return home, is not an ideal candidate for your daughter to marry.
Tom Hicks@TomHicks2LCF

A former adulteress who repented of her sins is a Christian. To deny that she is someone a godly man may faithfully marry is to deny the power of God in the gospel.

@profyancey Ok, so the inverse is true? Go ahead and declare that Christian women affirmatively should marry Christian men with sordid pasts, and without any hedging, George.

So if Christian men should not marry Christian women with a sordid past, does that mean that Christian women should not marry Christian men with a sordid past? Inquiring minds want to know.

@SocietyMovies Eh. The current debate involves a lot of actual, practicing Christians. I think only a sliver of very online people even know about the Stock story, and there isn't really a debate over the grift there (unlike with the current saga).

@brendenmoore13 @Marathonpundit "Distracts from those real issues" that I won't name or write about or ask meaningful pointed questions about. Imagine being a local govt reporter whose most significant foray into a politically-charged murder of a student in his community is to ask about a Fox News video.

@Marathonpundit There are legitimate questions about how local, state and federal policies may have failed Sheridan Gorman. But Fox News dredging up a video from six months earlier and claiming it was “near the area” where she was killed is misleading and distracts from those real issues.

@profyancey Fair - But wouldn't you be praying earnestly for the former as a parent? Redemption is real and plenty strong enough to overcome the latter. But as a parent, is making that judgment call what you'd hope for your son? The framing here sounds like the opposite.

I have three sons. They are too young to be in serious romantic relationships now, but that day is rapidly approaching. If they were to decide they did not want to date women with a promiscuous past, that would be their decision to make. I would talk to them about their decision, limiting their choices, but otherwise I would honor it. However, if they did date a fine Christian woman with a promiscuous past and she showed by her attitudes and actions that she was committed to the Lord and my son, then I would welcome her into the family with open arms. Any concern I would have would stem from her current character, not her past sins. Just as I hope anyone who evaluates me does so based on my current state, not my past sins. Sins by the way that we all have, The fact that some are debating whether to treat redeemed people as redeemed is baffling to me.
