Mark Pope walks off the court for the final time of the 2025-26 season. Preseason Final Four expectations to a second round exit, a disappointing season for Kentucky. When Pope was hired, one Big 12 assistant told me something that held very true this season: “The only concern from me would be if he will feel pressure to chase a different pool of players resulting in losing what got him the job in the first place.”

Curious where Kentucky fans stand after two years of Mark Pope. Sweet 16 last season, epic first-round win and second-round blowout loss this season. 1) Grade the Pope era so far. 2) What must happen next season to feel confident?

I didn’t have a lot of hope for a long March run but I expected better than a blowout loss to a team missing its best player. Just a huge disappointment in the last game of a roller coaster season.

Iowa State beating Kentucky by 20 plus without their All-American should be surprising, but it isn’t. It is telling. Of the importance of roster fit, culture and development. They lost a star, but he was just a cog in the machine. Thats how a team with ~1/3 of the NIL can win a game like that.

This Kentucky team fought back this season to make it respectable, but Mark Pope will have some pressure on him entering Year 3. And most important aspect will be putting together the roster.

Mark Pope is a smart guy. Has great Kentucky ties. Was fantastic at BYU. But Iowa State is working his guys. Getting too many easy buckets in second half. Ugly look.

Kentucky is playing so damn hard on defense. They really are fighting as good as they have all year I don’t know if they will have enough Offense under this pressure to pull it out, but the Defensive effort has been great
