But what they did around it separated them as batters. If Smith has say two more years averaging 30 r lesswould we still hold him as high?

Eg smith too had a poor BGT away in 23, and Ashes away in 23. They won’t takeaway anything from his greatness

@psychidiaries @cookedsnowflake I’ve seen Kohli behave like a headless chicken in 2014 England, 2017 home vs Aus in the middle of his purple patch, granted he is a level or two lower than Root. Dravid in the middle of his peak couldn’t bat in SA. Punter obviously struggled right through in India.

@psychidiaries @cookedsnowflake Depends on what one calls “peak”. For Root, it’s pretty much been 13 years of peak, where he’s averaged above 45 in India, and has been decidedly below average in Aus. Pre-2020, he had 7500 runs at 51 with 17 100s n 50 50s. Post 2020, he’s just improved his conversion.

@psychidiaries There has actually been a suggestion to consider only first 3 tests of a 5 test series as valid contenders for WTC points, and make all other test series as 3 test series in order to homogenise the system. The way things are going, may not be a bad idea

From the next ASHES down under, they should have 3 proper test matches and 4th and 5th matches should be- one bowl out and one super 6s challenge. That's about the only way England can compete against Australia.
