Close Call at John F. Kennedy International Airport Prompts Emergency Maneuvers
Two passenger jets were forced to abort their landings Monday afternoon after air traffic controllers ordered evasive action during a tense moment in the skies over New York. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when an American Airlines regional jet on final approach drifted off course and into the path of an arriving Air Canada Jazz aircraft preparing to land on a parallel runway.
Anti-collision alarms sounded in both cockpits and the control tower, prompting immediate responses from both flight crews, who executed go-arounds. According to radar data, the planes came within 350 feet vertically and just over half a mile apart. Both aircraft later landed safely, and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it is investigating the near miss.
