Behold Norway's World Cup team photo. Paying homage to their Viking past, something neither Swedes nor Danes tend to feel comfortable doing. I wasn't planning to root for them, but I sure as heck will do now! (up to a point, of course...)

@staddann Some of the criticism comes from the fact that a lot of Norwegians know exactly how Iron age Scandinavians dressed thanks to our educational system and museums.
The picture looks nothing akin to them and more like a dark fantasy, here is what the Vikings actually looked like

English

@HandyGingerGal Some of the criticism received comes from the fact that most of us are well aware of how our Iron age ancestors dressed,
Which is sadly nothing akin to that picture. Based upon archeological sources from graves, this reenactors garment is more akin to iron age Scandinavians

English

@Burrito_Queen7 @Rothmus Well they do look nothing like iron age Scandinavians tho more akin to some fantasy movie barbarians...
English

@Rothmus The critics of this Norway team photo can seriously go fck themselves.
Here's the entire photo.

English

@Artemisfornow They look absolutely nothing like historical iron age Scandinavians tho, which is kinda hilarious
In comparison this is more akin to how they looked based upon archeological sources of the Iron age Scandinavians graves we have found

English

@RMistereggen It's not anything Viking related tho, more like a fantasy version, Viking era clothing looks sadly nothing like that tbh

@RdHdSteppeson @achillghost I point out the practices survived since they needed to be banned up until the 18th century C.E when Christianity's hold on the culture finally started to die
You call me a larper, instead of engaging with the argument
English

@brg_third @achillghost That’s not what ad hominem means.
English

You actually cannot read non-Christian Norse literature. Pre-Christian Norse literature consists of like a comb that someone wrote “comb” on, in runes
Lyman Stone 石來民 🦬🦬🦬@lymanstoneky
Actually, you can read non-Christian Viking/Norse literature and find it is not alien, not alien at all, in fact immediately accessible and totally familiar The Greeks and Romans are alien Vikings didn’t become Christian. Christianity became Scandinavian.
English

Norsk

@EkelLenny Yes we were so ass for taking revenge on Charlemagne cause he picked his cousins after failing in Spain, kinslayers and oathbreakers deserve nothing but the worst
English

@RdHdSteppeson @achillghost No just practicing 4800 years of cultural and religious traditions which Christianity did not push out.
Nice ad hominen tho, thanks for showing you got no counter point
English

@RdHdSteppeson @achillghost Wierd how modern Nordic Animinism builds upon Fenno-Scandinavian Animinism and seeing how Fenno-Scandinavians were never fully Christianized we do build upon an unbroken line of traditions tho
English

No, it’s not, because as I pointed out already modern paganism isn’t a continuation, its a new thing built atop old trappings with no continuity to old paganism. You have constructed a system but its literally your new creation, built out of your secondary orality mind. The very fact you cite the collected fairy tales compared to the Eddas writteb down by Christian scholars is literally the point.
English

Norsk

Vikinger eller bønder i fra nord?
Ja takk, begge deler.
Skravleklassen får mene hva de vil. nrk.no/trondelag/reag…
Norsk

@RdHdSteppeson @achillghost Wierd when Asbjørnsen and Moe collects Norwegian fairy tales several is quite similar to the edda's,
But sorry the Burger knows, sure seppo
English

@RdHdSteppeson @achillghost It's almost like a culture which at that point had carried it's faith orally for 4000 years at that point just kept on with it
