Don't be fooled by survivorship bias: Majority of successful people wake up early, but... majority of people who wake up early are not successful. Just because majority of successful people do something, doesn't mean that's the thing that made them successful.

It's not the algo. It's not the copy. It's not the time you post. It's not the # of followers you have. The #1 REASON why no one is engaging with you is simple... You're inauthentic. (I blame Twitter Growth for this) You treat X like a money printing machine... You view followers as another metric to chase... You remove the 'social' out of social media... Here's some more: You want replies but aren't reading other people's work. You want attention but you give none away. You want connections but you're not starting convos. You expect good will without giving out any. Here's the thing... If you want to build a brand? You need to build trust. And trust doesn't come overnight. It comes from: • Being generous • Being helpful • Being useful • Being kind Lemme ask you this: Would YOU follow you? Would YOU buy from you?

I've been writing a newsletter for the last 6 weeks. • 180+ subs • Average Open Rate 54.3% • Average Click Through 10.7% I'm still fumbling and experimenting with length, style and format. If you read newsletters, what's your ideal length?

Commodities, generics, and software Once a product category proves popular, it's common for more companies to enter the market. Eventually, many options appear that are essentially mostly the same. Now we've got something that quacks like a commodity. Once we've got a commodity, generics eventually follow. Devoid of fancy packaging, marketing, and advertising, prices fall while quality remains perfectly acceptable. Brand name products might be slightly better on some dimensions, but it ultimately becomes a value judgement. A few bucks difference? The confidence of buying a brand name still feels worth it. Many, many bucks different? Maybe not. This happens in most industries. Maybe not in airplanes, but absolutely in peanut butter. And you know what's closer to peanut butter than airplanes? Software is. Strangely, many software categories have commoditized, but, given that nearly everything is a service these days, operational costs have remained universally high. This makes it hard for lower priced generics to creep in. This means people continue to pay luxury prices for software services that are essentially commodities. We think something's wrong with that. Sounds like an opportunity. This is where ONCE comes in. One facet of our initial strategy with ONCE is to find those commoditized pay-forever services everyone's running, and make our own radically simplified "80/20" versions as pay-once products. And this time you get to own for less, not rent for more. And you'll get the code, too. In about a month we'll unveil the first ONCE product. Any guesses? once.com

@NFidlow This seems like a capitalistic way of defining adulthood. They're all about purchasing power. "When every individual is paying for everything then they've achieved something in our society." That has nothing to do with my definition of being an adult.

I'm FASCINATED by the topic of motivation and have some strong opinions about it. Here are 3 ways to NOT motivate yourself to do your marketing or show up more.

@jonathancarson_ I'd do it myself, but I like to make things harder than they need to be. And the best way to make things more complex is adding more people... especially ones you don't know and may not have any shared values with 🤣

@courageouslyaj Haha, yeah I'm surprised Apple, Google or Spotify haven't nailed this yet. Gajillions sounds nice, but running a tech start-up sounds like a nightmare to me.

How to avoid 2 extremes during divorce: 1. Holding on too tightly 2. Letting go too easily Your goal is to find the "Goldilocks" zone in between that I never found. I was pretty typical. I exhausted myself with 1 and fell hard into 2, walking away with no effort to salvage anything - physical or emotional. My advice: • Listen to trusted advisors to identify and accept when it's truly over. • If it's over, shift to salvage mode before you empty your internal resources, grow bitter, and walk away. • In salvage mode, spend your energy building a friendly, cordial relationship with your ex rather than trying to hold the relationship together or seeking revenge. By taking this approach you might salvage a cordial relationship with your ex, reduce lifelong angst and frustration, and make life easier on your children and extended families.

@jonathancarson_ This can not be so difficult, can it? WHY has someone not done this? Easy enough to make money on advertising, just like YouTube? Shall we partner on this and make our gajillions together?

@courageouslyaj 100%. Even something as simple as a comment section like YouTube would be a good start. I’d also love to be able to tag, search and organise episodes by subject matter.

@Pam_Rubin1 I wonder if the average person doesn't have something worth listening to for more than 8 seconds.... Communication is 2-way, so being a quality listener and equally being a quality speaker are valuable skills.

The average listener has an 8 second attention span. If you can concentrate and listen for even 10 minutes without distraction, you will have a competitive advantage over almost everyone else. Focused listening is a superpower.

@jackmoses0 I'm curious about what you mean by "negative thought" and how you might differentiate the above from by-passing or toxic positivity?

Positive psychology hack: Every time you have a negative thought, intentionally replace it with a positive one. This is how you rewire your brain towards positivity, optimism, and abundance.
