The ancient Greek word translated sympathize here literally means “to suffer along with.” We can’t allow the pain we feel, as immense as it may be, to feel as if Jesus is no longer who He says He is in His Word. Jesus dealt with pain far worse than we could ever imagine. • He was betrayed by one of his best friends, who he dedicated years of his life to. • The Jewish crowd chose a criminal to be released over him. • He was flogged an inch away from death before he had to carry a cross through the streets of Jerusalem while the crowds mocked, cursed and spit on him • Jesus was beaten and scorned on our behalf. He bore the sins of the world on the cross. And Jesus went willingly to the cross, after sweating blood in the Garden of Gethsemane because he knew the painstaking details of the events that were to follow soon after He was betrayed. I sympathize with Savanah, what she is going through is devastating, but this Jesus being presented in her Easter message is not the one of The Bible. This Jesus is absent, uncaring, and not all knowing and all powerful. Jesus knew he’d rise in 3 days, as was prophesied. Jesus explicitly predicted his resurrection multiple times in the Bible. Jesus can’t seem far away during anguish, but that is why we need to hold fast to what is true and “with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

His purpose is not to hear at the end of his life “Well done good basketball player”… He desires to love God, make Him known and hear “Well done good and faithful servant”. NBA front offices want great basketball players who produce, are good brand builders, teammates, and trustworthy on and off the court. Christians are called to do everything with excellence, including playing sports, for the glory of God. He’s not saying he doesn’t want to work hard or doesn’t care about basketball. He’s simply saying that, as a Christian, loving God and spreading the Gospel is his TRUE purpose. His identity is in Christ, not basketball.
