Very unfortunate! I had texted Mr Rubongoya for her number, to thank her for her recent bold speech that I had just watched, only to be told that she’s dead! A few days ago when I attended the Alternative Budget reading function at Parliament, I sat behind (as I often prefer). She came to me, greeted me very respectfully in Luganda on bended knee, and asked to take me to sit in front. I politely chose to stay at the back. A few minutes later, she came back and urged me again. I reluctantly accepted this stranger’s request. I later noticed that she was the MC. She returned the third time where I was seated in front and asked me to speak, which I turned down. She returned… That was the first time I got to know her, and was so impressed by her humility - especially when I later learnt that she was an MP. Go well Hon. Helen Nakimuli. At 40 years you were just beginning! Some things about life we might never understand, we simply carry and move on as we wait for our own hour.

For over 10 years, I have been a faithful reader of @Kalinaki’s Thursday article in the Daily Monitor. I rarely missed a single piece, save on those occasions when he chose to remain silent. Few Ugandan writers have moved me as he has, his work consistently balancing enlightenment with sheer enjoyment. I always walk away from every piece carrying something new. I’m lucky that I shared the same space with DK, as we fondly called him for close to a decade. DK wasn’t just a journalist. He was a guy you could walk up to, ask about anything, and leave with a handful. I called him my bunker for premium advertising ideas. He was the guy I ran to every time I felt devoid of winning advertising concepts, and he always delivered without scratching his head. As you walk out of the newsroom, I wish you all the best. I have just spoken with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian. I called on him to put an immediate end to the unacceptable attacks Iran is carrying out against countries in the region, whether directly or through proxies, including in Lebanon and Iraq. I reminded him that France is acting within a strictly defensive framework aimed at protecting its interests, its regional partners, and freedom of navigation, and that it is unacceptable for our country to be targeted. The unchecked escalation we are witnessing is plunging the entire region into chaos, with major consequences today and for the years to come. The people of Iran, like those across the region, are paying the price. Only a new political and security framework can ensure peace and security for all. Such a framework must guarantee that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, while also addressing the threats posed by its ballistic missile programme and its destabilising activities regionally and internationally. Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be restored as soon as possible. I also urged the Iranian President to allow Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris to return safely to France as soon as possible.
