Brittney Griner enters Year 13 just 19 blocks away from becoming the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocks.
The 6’9 center has averaged (2.4) blocks per game for her career and has led the league in blocks eight times, most recently in 2021. That mark is currently tied with Margo Dydek, the league’s current all-time blocks leader, who also led the league in blocks during eight of her 11 seasons.
Griner opened her career by averaging at least 3+ blocks per game in each of her first four seasons. Her (4.0) blocks per game during her third season remain the highest average in WNBA history, while her 129 total blocks during her second season are still the most ever recorded in a single season. That season was also one of her three 100-block campaigns, the second most in league history behind Dydek. No other player has ever recorded a 100-block season.
Her block numbers have declined over the years, including a career-low (1.2) blocks per game last season. But if Griner takes on a larger role in Connecticut this year, there’s a good chance she works her way back into the top five in blocks.
And depending on how many seasons she has left, the 35-year-old could eventually become the first player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 career blocks, a milestone that could realistically be reached within the next two to three seasons. ✨
