For the Sunday Times today, a long read on contradictions in state-sponsored suicide provided by doctors: neither freedom nor true mercy, but pretending to be both. My book on the issue comes out next week thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Dignity in Dying are looking for a new Treasurer. Certainly no intention of disbanding if the bill passes: “With the organisation likely to see huge cultural and legal shifts...all Board members need to be innovative in their approach to help build sustainable funding stream.”

The Speaker has confirmed that only five 'non Kim' amendments will be voted on on Friday. All these elements of the Bill are now permanent. A 'yes' vote at Third Reading is to accept: 🚨Any doctor can raise ending a patient's life, no matter how vulnerable the patient, including those with learning disabilities [NC1 rejected] 🚨 Doctors and the panel only have to be 51% sure that the patient is not coerced or pressured, meets the criteria, or really wishes to die [NC9 not selected] 🚨Doctors do not need to be an expert in a patient’s condition, nor know the patient, nor are they required to involve other professionals. This increases the risk of mistakes [45 not selected] 🚨 The panels which have replaced the High Court will not have the power to investigate further, and will consist of self-selecting members, rather than being independently appointed [82-86 not selected] 🚨'Education campaigns' targeting “all professionals…family, friends, unpaid carers and other support organisations and charities” as specified in the impact assessment [NC14a rejected] 🚨 Private, for-profit contractors can run the service with no profit cap and no transparency obligations [15 not selected] 🚨 MPs will be sidelined from decisions about what this service will look like, and what their constituents will experience [103, 104 not selected] 🚨 The Bill will autocommence in 2029 no matter what training or work is left undone, or what the state of the NHS or palliative care is [102 not selected] 🚨Hospices and care homes who do not want to participate in assisted dying will have no protection in law and could have funding predicated on participation [NC17 not selected] 🚨There are no obligations to ensure drug safety standards, protect against distressing or prolonged death, and no need for patient clarity about possible complications [99 + 100, 27 not selected] 🚨Independent oversight is gone for good: the Chief Medical Officer has been removed and replaced with the Commissioner marking his team's homework [NC4 not selected] 🚨 MPs have no guarantee that the necessary data will be gathered from Day 1, without which it will be hard to understand how assisted dying is used and who it is impacting [NC19 not selected] 🚨 Coroners will be excluded despite strong opposition from the Royal College of Pathologists and former Chief Coroner that this will mean wrongdoing is concealed [NC15a not selected for decision]

Kinnock: protecting those with Downs Syndrome from having assisted dying suggested to them might be challenged on human rights grounds

'A grieving daughter who was forced to say a final goodbye to her mum as she left in a taxi for Dignitas has urged MPs to back the assisted dying bill when it returns to the Commons this week.'

Banning assisted dying makes no one safer, it just forces people to take drastic action behind closed doors. Law change will make us all safer. #YesToDignity

It's fair to say that this week's Breakfast Club messaging by government was a dud with the mums of instagram

In 2021 we won a new offence of 'non fatal strangulation' after 'choking' in sex had become so widespread young women told us they thought "it was normal". We expected that charities, govt and sex ed would help stop this. But no. We Can't Consent to This:

The concept of “terminal anorexia” was developed to enable people with eating disorders to die by assisted death. Framing the symptoms of a treatable mental illness as an informed choice to die reflects a profound misunderstanding of anorexia. As @ProfLAppleby notes, respect for autonomy must be balanced with duties of care.

This is the official Police response to whether children can play in the street. Motornormativity exists everywhere, in this case, prioritising the potential feelings of drivers over the independence of children. How utterly depressing.

Still astounded that Kim wanted to do a bill on puppy smuggling, but took enormity of AD on with no hinterland on it, after being approached by multiple orgs to sell their cause when she got picked for PMB. Puppies PMB wd not have had staff lurking in private women's meetings...

I apologised to the members of the Assisted Dying Bill committee tonight as I had to leave early. I didn’t want to but had to because my hearing aids need to recharge after 15 hours use and without them I cannot hear or take part in the committee. Hearing isn’t a choice for me. I’ve raised this issue repeatedly with members of the committee and it’s sad that I’m unable to continue today. I have chosen to give up a lot, especially during Ramadan, to make sure I can contribute in this committee and in politics. I wanted to stay as long as I could for these hugely important discussions and it is frustrating that I cannot because of my disability.

The @rcgp changes stance on assisted death. Here's @thelizcarr insight on what @dignityindying focused on when the last big bill -opposed by Drs and disability orgs - failed in 2015. "The campaign has been to go round and work with the Drs' orgs and get the votes brought in"

'Doctors have accused the RCGP of "grossly misrepresenting" the views of members by softening its stance on assisted dying..' and rightly so since its leaders' vote did not reflect that of its members. thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/…
