Juries are a fundamental protection in our society. They are not to blame to the backlog and removing them in some cases will have very little effect on the backlog and it will deprive some of the most vulnerable of justice.

'It's disgusting that they're using victims in this way' Dennis Kavanagh discusses fears Labour are invoking rape trial wait times to 'railroad through parliament' jury trial restrictions.

1/ A small minority of unelected peers are filibustering the Assisted Dying Bill to death with over a thousand amendments. The elected Commons passed it. The public backs it. I will keep fighting until the will of the people is honoured.

@JohnSlinger Do you think you could make the “will of the people” point with more force had it been in a manifesto John?

“We welcome this move from the SHRC. For too long, women’s rights have been bottom of the pile when drawing up policy: at best, our rights have been neglected; worse, however, they have often been violated. So, it is good to see a Scottish organisation state so clearly that women’s rights are also human rights. We hope this trend continues.” heraldscotland.com/news/25949150.…

Depriving people of the right to trial by jury is an egregious assault on a pillar of our justice system. The opposition to these proposals is significant, be it the 3,200 lawyers, including senior barristers and retired judges, who wrote to the government last week about their opposition to the plans, or the 100 Labour MPs who refused to back the attempt by the government to curtail the right to trial by jury. The government must reverse its ill-judged decision. #JusticeNeedsJuries

Under the government's proposals, not one of the 900 wrongly convicted subpostmasters would have had a right to trial by jury. The Prime Minister himself concluded in a report that the scrapping of jury trials led to miscarriages of justice in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The right to trial by jury must be protected. #JusticeNeedsJuries

Maybe the man who called women rights-hoarding dinosaurs and cynically exploits the plight of rape victims to restrict an 800 yr old core principle of British justice won’t be swayed by the collective voices of women who know just how harmful his reforms will be but he should be

David Lammy MP has been hammering home that his proposed jury restrictions are for victims of crime. Yesterday, over THIRTY organisations across the VAWG sector wrote David a letter. And it was clear: They do not support the restriction of jury trial. rightsofwomen.org.uk/wp-content/upl…

The Covid-19 Inquiry has found that people avoided seeking treatment out of a desire not to 'burden' the NHS. If we had an assisted dying system, how many more would choose the quick way out rather than 'burden' the NHS, family, and friends?

The Post Office scandal victim Parmod Kalia was wrongly convicted, sent to prison, had his conviction overturned in 2021, and still died waiting for full compensation. That should shame everyone involved.

The NHS’s puberty-blockers trial is a disaster waiting to happen. Politicians who stay silent will be complicit in this grotesque experiment on kids. MPs must do all they can to stop it, says Jo Bartosch buff.ly/TVzGWjD
