The thing about Aristotelian physics is, it’s really good. It’s honestly phenomenal. Yes, there are errors, as there are with his biological accounts (but read The Parts of Animals, dude was a serious scientist just not in the way we think). But the other thing is 1/3

I’m tired of the Aristotelian physics slander. Yes, heavier object fall faster than light ones, all else equal, *when immersed in a fluid* which is every environment Aristotle had access to. Do the experiment yourself. Drop a bowling ball and a same-sized ball of foam. There’s a great paper called “Aristotle’s Physics: a Physicist’s Look” that demonstrates how Aristotelian physics is a special case approximation of Newtonian physics in the same way Newtonian physics is a special case approximation of relativity and QM. Aristotle’s physics reigned for so long not because people were unthinkingly dogmatic, but because it was genuinely hard to come up with better models. Aristotle had to model celestial objects separately from terrestrial objects because his terrestrial model is describing *terminal* velocity and breaks down in the zero-friction limit. So he had two incompatible models. Newton unified them. Now we have two incompatible models - QM and GR - and are looking for unification. The more things change…

@HorrorPaperback Reminds me of the wrong version of It's Alive, instead of killer babies and biting satire of then modern day life it was a proto lifetime movie bolted to a tour of the Ozarks with a dinosaur thing.

My generation learned the hard way to deal with disappointment. We'd rent videos with incredible Vallejo-esque box art: a vast post-apocalyptic hellscape populated with bizarrely-clad warriors and snarling mutants, everything on fire. Then we'd hit play and it was dogshit.

@SandyofCthulhu Evil Dead when Ash is leaning on the door. Nothing happens for the usual amount of time, so you feel safe and Ash looks relieved. Then the Deadite punches through the door.

Lessons from designing horror since 1980: When making impactful horror, the scariest moments are those people imagine up.
One of my signature ploys in Doom was empty rooms with a pedestal. Atop the pedestal would be something good, like a BFG. The player stares at it KNOWING something bad will happen when they grab it. Of course they grab it anyway.
The point is the anticipation of the event is scarier than the event. When all hell breaks loose the player isn’t scared then - he’s frantically running and gunning.
Anyway that’s my example. What is a ‘nothing happened yet’ moment in a game or movie that terrified you?

@RantyAmyCurtis When I was in the service almost twenty years ago, this is the kind of meals they served on a carrier (steak and lobster was an extreme rarity). I remember we had a supply onload one time, and despite being frozen, you could smell the chicken in the boxes.
