Ever since I met @sidd in our early days at Stripe, I hoped we’d one day find an idea big enough to start a company together. That day is finally here. After building quietly for the past year, I’m excited to officially launch @AccrualHQ, a new foundation for professional accounting 👇

I’m broadly aligned with @julienbek's thesis: AI companies will increasingly sell outcomes, not tools. But if we’re talking about $1T companies, I think the conclusion misses an important second-order effect. Automation alone doesn’t create trillion-dollar businesses. Those companies also need organic growth and market expansion. Take accounting, where I’ve spent the last year and plan to spend quite a bit more time. The core services haven’t changed much in decades: bookkeeping, tax prep, close, audit. If you exclude M&A and price increases, even the best firms grow single digits. Most are flat or shrinking. The labor shortage is real. Partners are retiring, fewer CPAs are graduating, and a lot of manual work is already outsourced, increasingly offshore. AI will clearly automate a large share of that workflow. But when you talk to firm owners, the story isn’t “we’ll cut half the staff.” Clients still want someone accountable for the work produced. They don’t particularly care whether that work is done by a human or AI, but they want a person responsible for it. Because of that, most firms aren’t planning dramatic headcount reductions. And as automation spreads, there will likely be price pressure. Early adopters expand margins for a few years. Then competition compresses them again. So the real unlock isn’t bottom-line efficiency. Automation improves margins. New services create new markets. What new services become possible once the manual work disappears? That’s the conversation I rarely see investors or firm owners having. When we started @AccrualHQ, most questions were about efficiency gains. Those are real. We’re already seeing workflows shrink by an order of magnitude in some cases. But what I’m most excited about is bringing growth back to the industry and finding new ways for firms to help their clients thrive. Fintech went through something similar. Many companies initially looked like software businesses but ended up with financial-services margins. The outliers (Stripe, Robinhood, etc.) used technology to unlock entirely new products. I suspect the same thing will happen in accounting. AI will automate the old work. The real opportunity is inventing entirely new accounting services. It’s neither obvious nor easy. Which is exactly why it’s worth building.
