I’ve noticed some of the less thoughtful crusade enthusiasts seem to think any aggression by a Muslim counts as ‘Islamic aggression’ yet seems to expect the fourth crusade, an explicitly Christian endeavour, to be set aside and not counted as something Christian.

The Emperor called for help because he saw a window to retake Anatolia as Turkish power weakened. The Pope backed it believing a crusade could reach Jerusalem. Religion mattered. But for commanders and nobles; land, lordship, loot, income, and fame often mattered more. And faith was the best tool (on both sides) to convince the poor to march and die.

@nonregemesse Again, it was never the goal If Innocent could have, the leaders would have been arrested and punished And after the sack, what was the pope supposed to do? Unsack Constantinople? Unkill the Emperor?

Muslims were also humanbeings, they just had a different belief in mythology than the Christians had. They had the emotions of greed and revenge; and they also pursued power, wealth, supremacy, etc. And they had and still has no equivalent of a Pope, or an organized uniform Church. Muslim kingdom were far more autonomous than the Christian ones; and they often conquered each other’s regions as well. And remember, there never was a unified Islamic army of several kingdoms. Let it be Ottomans or Saladin or Umayyads; they fought alone.

@nonregemesse Well the crusaders who sacked Constantinople didnt do it because they hated Christians or because the Pope said to or because the Bible justified it. They did it out of greed and revenge. All Muslim aggression towards Christians however, is explicitly a religious endeavour
