@MJKelleyII You can’t call a man Petra. It’s a girls name. In Aramaic, (I assume Jesus wasn’t speaking Greek to Simon Peter) it would have been the same word though.

@jdflynn I am a convert and often notice the same thing. The replies that say “I/we go for Christ not for other people” are missing something important: The fellowship of a parish in its genuine fraternal charity contributes significantly to our offering at Mass.

I am never leaving the Catholic Church. Couldn’t if I tried. But I go to an Evangelical mega church every week for a meeting. And every week I think: “Wow. This is strange. These people really seem to want me here.”
Ryan Burge 📊@ryanburge

Evangelical young adults are significantly more likely to go to church frequently than other young Protestants or Catholics. Among evangelicals born in the early 2000s, 49% attend church every week. Mainline: 23% Black Protestant: 25% Catholic: 19%

@freganmitts Well, it’s only fair since, as Dostoevsky said, “as soon as you sincerely make yourself responsible for everything and for all men, you will see at once that it is really so…”

People simply cannot stop quoting a Dostoevsky novel character and attributing the quote to Dostoevsky. Absolutely irresistible move. Does this happen with other novelists? To people think he personally endorses everything his characters say??

@briankeepsworth Yikes! I just read the other replies and realised that my comment above is redundant.

@briankeepsworth Unfortunately, anti-Semitic, so-called Christian-nationalists are also suggesting dropping “judeo”, but for different reasons.

For advocates of "Western Civilzation", wouldn't it be much more productive to substitute the phrase "Judeo-Christian Values" with "Biblical Values"?

Nothing showy or emotive here, but still the best speech I can remember from any living parliamentarian.

I see in this week's Tablet letters page, we have now reached the "why should we read the Bible at Mass at all?" stage of the ESV-CE lectionary complaining. Cringe. So much for the post-Vatican II biblical renewal, I guess! 😬

“Hmm, what would be one really good image to convey the state of progressive Catholicism? Oh, I know! An elderly priest talking to a child about the joy of sex! Yeah, that’s the ticket!”

Cardinal Radcliffe says that the “challenge of talking about the synod is rather like talking about s3x with somebody who’s just getting to puberty…it’s about how you’re alive in a new way.” A notable view about a Synod which has been billed as being for whole Church Video: youtube.com/watch?v=IbkWiU…

Good to see the Telegraph and Spectator taking JD Vance’s side in our debate. Who knew the election of Trump would make our right wing media embrace the fringe idea that Christian love is about putting yourself and your own people first? telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/01/3…

Although, that is hard when people we don’t often agree with are being mean, partisan and opinionated! 😭

Catholics should engage with their brethren’s concern, not vilify them. They might have failed in charity towards Vance and the Church Fathers (maybe even the Church), but it is just to assume their motivation is love for God and Stranger.

The Ordo Amoris’ is Trinitarian, it rests on the nature of love itself: mutuality and fruitfulness. You can’t love your neighbour if you don’t love yourself, because you don’t know what love is. What are you giving them? What are you inviting them into? Love is not selflessness
