@hdmillr @SickosCommittee I’m a Harv grad and am too closely aware of how clueless Ivy students can be with sports and sports history. But this is on another level. It reminds me of lost historical artifacts hidden in Hogwarts lol. Can’t believe it was just THERE for like 40 years?? My goodness.

The goalposts from Columbia's 1988 defeat of Princeton, a victory that ended Columbia's 44-game losing streak, a college football record at the time. Found in the "garden" behind my daughter's Columbia apartment.

@legallybrown703 @SickosCommittee That's what my daughter said. The funny thing is, I have two daughters at Columbia on the rowing team. The one who wasn't living in the apartment recognized it. The one in the apartment ignored it.

@hdmillr @SickosCommittee So presumably the goalposts just sat there while generations of students looked at it with no idea of the history? Did students (prob not sports fans) just think it was a rusty pipe or something? This is so wild. Need more backstory here

Just saw something on the news about how only 23 people have ever seen the far side of the moon and they are all American men (I would add: from our most restrictive immigration law era).

@RolandGunnTN American Protestantism is rightfully iconoclastic. Get those idols out of my church.

The Byzantine style of iconography is a product of canons which are not our canons, and artistic traditions which are not our traditions. We have Anglo, Celtic & American styles of religious art going back centuries to draw off of. Byzantine iconography doesn’t belong in Western rites.

I don't understand the appeal of placing Eastern Orthodox Icons in the front of Anglican Churches. It screams high-church nondenominationalism. If you want imagery, at least go with something authentically Anglican.

@DisgracedProp My nephew bought a house on a golf course in Merced that has a pomelo tree with the most delicious fruit I've ever had. Completely justified the purchase of the house.

My favorite St. Patrick’s Day read today comes from @hdmillr . The Curse of an Irish Cook The Glory of Irish Cuisine is Boiled Meat on St. Patrick's Day “Biddy was becoming American. How could it have been otherwise? The Irish girls made good money, read a lot of books and newspapers, and had no intention of going back to Ireland. They were dead set on becoming American, and being American meant republicanism, egalitarian manners, and showing and being shown proper respect.” open.substack.com/pub/eccentricc…

@zanehkoch My dad is 100 and was a nuclear engineer for 60 years. I showed him the thread and he said, "This was discovered at Oak Ridge National Laboratory a long time ago [1950s], and it was deliberately repressed because it didn't fit with the narratives about radiation."

for a while i've had a slight fear that the bluetooth from my airpods could be frying my brain this weekend i pulled the raw data from a $30m government study of 1,679 mice blasted with cell phone radiation and reanalyzed it what i found was...not what I expected? 🧵

@CowboyGospeler When I was learning Arabic at DLI in the mid-80s, I went over there for sailing lessons. The Post Graduate School had sailboats at a pier in Monterey you could borrow for an afternoon. Very fun.

In the state of Wyoming in the USA lies a real hydrological oddity. It's a small stream (creek) that is thought to be the only one of very few examples in the world. It is placed so precariously and perfectly that it's hard to believe it is able to exist. 1/n

My wife ask me if I ever noticed Californians say 'sure' (shur / shir), out of state folks living here say shore / shoor. So far I'm batting thousand when I ask people that say 'shore' where they're from, it's always another state. My fellow Southwest folks, you say it like us?

It's not that they couldn't afford a pastor or an organ. It's that, on the frontier, they were going to each others services. The Methodist circuit rider one week, the Presbyterian the next, the Episcopalian the next, often in the same log chapel. People like Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone were very intentional in figuring out a theology that diminished the differences between Protestants. They arrived at primitivism as the compromise.

I own serial number 1586. Obliterated US and patent dates (possible outlaw use, deserting soldier, or indian captured after a battle). Small traces of a period nickel plating. All original. My Colt is bookended by serial numbers owned by outlaws and other famous soldiers and regiments. Including serial 1543 which was a documented 7th Cavalry gun, and 2499 which was owned by Custer's scout Charley Reynolds who was killed at Little Bighorn.
