He brought the sanctuary to the dirt, signaling that the ground where the broken stand is holy ground. He didn’t start the speech by establishing doctrine, condemning the wayward, or placing a single obligation on His listeners. He opened with comfort. And the choice of His first word was not accidental. The word Matthew records is makarios. In the world Jesus was speaking into, that word belonged to the gods and the ultra-wealthy, the enviable ones kissed by fortune, living in effortless ease. Jesus didn’t bother inventing a new term. He invaded the old one, emptied it of its gold, and refilled it with the opposite contents. He looked at the ‘ptōchos’, not just the poor but the abject crouching beggars with no claim to anything, and declared them the truly enviable ones. In doing so He dismantled every theology that mapped prosperity to divine favor and handed the highest status in the universe to those who had been told they had no claim to God at all. And then I noticed that of all the Beatitudes, only two are written in the present tense. The first and the last. While the mourning are promised future comfort and the meek a future inheritance, the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the poor in spirit and the persecuted right now. He grants immediate possession to the people religion had already passed over. He spoke past every Pharisee who thanked God for his own righteousness and landed the sermon directly on the people sitting in the dust because they had nowhere else to be.
