@wnwagner Here by Richard McGuire. It might not be exactly what you have in mind, but it plays with time in the most beautiful way.

As just one small example of how not-competition we are... When we were getting started, @TenebrousPress shared one of their standard contracts with me so I didn't have to start from scratch. Since then, I've made a lot of updates, incorporating feedback from agents and authors, and new terms based on experience. Two months ago, @LittleGhostsBoo asked if I would share one our standard contracts so they didn't have to start from scratch. I was more than happy to pay it forward. A lot of time and effort go into setting up a contract, it can be daunting building one from nothing. @AlexWoodroe and @MattBlairstone sharing theirs saved me a lot of time, money, and stress. And in turn, I hope I saved @Kaijuklutz some of those same headaches. We can all do better work when we work together.

Question: Do people like collecting custom buttons and should I make a batch for StokerCon?

The decision to drop Zach’s stories yesterday cost us about $600. I had paid him for his magazine story (5 cents/word) already, I had paid to have it line/proof edited already, I had paid to have his story in the SHADOWS IN THE STACKS anthology proofed, and paid to print paperback ARCs of the anthology that will not be sent out, and now I have to acquire a new replacement story and pay to proof that at a rushed rate. Take that amount and multiply it by the dozen+ presses I saw dropping his work yesterday, and we're talking about a big financial impact on a lot of very small presses. We only average $4 of profit on each book sold, meaning I must sell an extra 150 books just to break even. And none of that takes into account the lost time... Full workdays gone to dealing with emails, posts, DMs, redesigning the paperback wrap to remove his name, redesigning the interior files with the replacement story, redesigning social graphics, updating our website, updating Amazon, Goodreads, and everywhere else to remove his name. If I could afford to pay myself for my Shortwave work, that would be another couple hundred dollars. Actions like his don’t only cause real emotional and psychological damage, they also cause real financial damage. That said, let me be clear: 1. I am not upset that these actions were brought to light, leading to these costly decisions. I’m happy our profession / community is safer today than we were yesterday. 2. This is not to say the damage he caused financially is worse than the damage he caused emotionally. I just think this is maybe one aspect of these bad actors that isn’t taken into account publicly. Though, I can guarantee the presses making these decisions yesterday were all feeling the financial hit privately.
